Richard, who sadly passed away in 2020, was an American illustrator and comic book artist known for his work in underground comics. Comics such as those featured in Heavy Metal magazine, especially the Den series, which was featured in the magazine’s first film adaptation in 1981.
He was also well known for his contributions to mainstream comics and graphic novels. While he wasn’t born in Chester, he spent part of his childhood there and attended Chester High School.
Still qualifies as a famous person from Chester in my book, quite simply because, “my website, my rules!!”

Chester Illinois, does not have a university within its city limits. However, like many small towns in the United States, it will have educational institutions that provide primary and secondary education. These would include public schools serving students from kindergarten through twelfth grade.
For higher education, residents of Chester would typically have access to nearby colleges and universities in surrounding areas. These could include community colleges offering associate degree programs, as well as larger universities offering bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees.
One example of a nearby university is Southern Illinois University Carbondale, located approximately 50 miles southeast of Chester. This public research university offers a wide range of academic programs and is a major educational institution in the region. So, in likening it to our own Chester, about the same distance from here in Chester to Manchester.
