Famous People From Chester
Chester is most noteworthy for its history and its fine architecture, but it is also famous for its people. In this section we will list some of the more famous people (and cats) from Chester. I wonder how many will say, “I didn’t know they were from Chester”. Or, will say, “I’ve never heard of them”. In the main they are either from the world of sport or from TV and films….(or from a Supermarket!!).
Famous People From Chester
So, here is that list…..and again before you get stuck into it from the top if you are a new visitor, I have slightly amended the format. Over time the page has grown and grown and any new additions can be buried way down if regular visitors only want to see the new additions and not revisit the whole list again. So, a bit of teccy wizardry needed by yours truly. Whenever I have a new addition what I will do is, I will add a link to exactly where that addition appears. Just have a look below and I hope I’ve done it right.
However, if you are a first time visitor, then carry on scrolling down and see the complete list.
And in a further refinement, I’ve added a category in my blog posts section as there are more and more to be added. Don’t blame me, blame it on these famous Chester related individuals.
Welcome to my “Famous People From Chester” page.

Actors and Actresses
Daniel Craig –
Almost all film goers will have heard of Daniel Craig. As the still just about, but outgoing, current James Bond it is difficult to stay out of the limelight. Although his role as James Bond is probably his most noteworthy, he has appeared in a lot more besides. In addition to his 007 role, take a look HERE at what else he has appeared in.
Another noteworthy claim to fame for Daniel, and one he no doubt name drops whenever he can……cough….cough…..is that his late father, Tim, used to work with a local, Chester website owner, who shall remain nameless, in Chester city centre.
Anyway, back onto Daniel and his role as James Bond. It was almost as if he was born to be a James Bond. Here is Daniel in Skyfall…..Oh, by the way, isn’t Daniel great in Knives Out and Glass Onion.
Emma Cunniffe –
Emma is a well recognised British film, stage and television actress. Her television credits include The Lakes. Also she appeared as “Biddy” in a TV adaptation of Great Expectations. Furthermore she had roles in All the King’s Men and Clash of the Santas. To see more of what Emma appeared in click HERE.
I have only recently seen Emma in a re-run of a great TV series, Unforgotten. Emma appeared in the second series.
Hugh Lloyd MBE –
Hugh was an English comedy actor. Those old enough to remember will be aware that Hugh made his name in television and film comedy from the 1960s to the 1980s. He was probably best known for his appearances in Hugh and I and a host of other comedy series of the 1960s. In addition to these roles, you can see what else he appeared in HERE.

Ian Puleston-Davies
We’re cheating a little here as Ian Puleston-Davies was actually born in Flint (or as Flint folk say, “Off Flint”). However, as he has lived in Chester for such a long time, he qualifies for “Famous People From Chester” status. Ian is probably best known for his role as builder Owen Armstrong in the popular ITV soap opera Coronation Street. He played the role regularly from 2010-2015.
Ian is not only famous for his appearances on “Corrie” however. A highly successful actor, Ian has also appeared in programmes such as Vincent (with Ray Winstone), Holby City, The Bill, Hollyoaks and Brookside. In addition he has shown up in episodes of Hustle, Life on Mars, Dalziel and Pascoe, Cape Wrath and Silent Witness.

Here’s Ian in his role as Owen Armstrong in “Corrie”…….
Famous People From Chester – More From Soapland
Any Brookside fans out there? Ah, any youngsters reading this may not have even heard of “Brookie.” Back in the day, it was a very popular Channel 4 soap, based in Liverpool.
Two of its stars reside in Chester. I know, I know, maybe semi cheating again as they are not from Chester originally. But, as they now live here, they qualify for inclusion in my “Famous People From Chester” page as per Rule 1 in my Chester Lifestyle rule book. And that is, it is my website so I decide who gets a mention and who doesn’t!! Fair enough methinks.
Anyway, back onto these Brookside stars of yesteryear. First up, Vince Earl, aka Ron Dixon from Brookside Close. Originally from nearby Birkenhead, Vince has lived in Chester for many years. So welcome Vince to your place on my “Famous People From Chester” page.
Who Else From Brookie?
Another welcome “Brookie” addition to “Famous People From Chester” page, or should that be Hall of Fame, is Steven Pinder, aka Max Farnham to mention him by his “Brookie” character name.
Steven, or Max, is seen out and about in Chester a fair bit. In fact, I could play the “Claim to Fame” card here. One occasion I was standing at the bar in The Brom in Hoole and watching the footie.
While doing so I was exchanging footie chat and comments to the fella standing next to me at the bar. I didn’t really look at him but sure enough, when it got to half-time, I noticed that the fella I was chatting to was “Max.”
I know what you’re thinking. Is it really a “claim to fame?” Would Steven Pinder, aka “Maxie,” really dash home to tell his family, “guess who I’ve just been chatting to – the website owner of Chester Lifestyle!!“
Joking apart, welcome aboard the Chester Lifestyle “Famous People From Chester” page Steven.
Ray Coulthard – Hotel Babylon and Emmerdale Fame
Here’s another addition to our “Famous People From Chester” page and another that initially slipped the net. Another actor who has appeared in some very popular TV programmes.
A big welcome to Ray Coulthard, an actor born in Chester in 1968. Two of his most famous roles was when he played Alasdair Sinclair in popular Yorkshire soap, Emmerdale. And he was a regular in Hotel Babylon where he played the role of restaurant manager, James Schofield.
He has appeared in plenty of other movies and TV programmes. For instance, as well as Emmerdale and Hotel Babylon, Ray has appeared in Casualty, Midsomer Murders, Foyle’s War, Silent Witness and many more small screen, popular offerings.
I’m sure the next famous person from Chester was well known to many. Was the programme he appeared in classed as a soap? I’m sure it was. But if not, then I know……
Graham Roberts
Appeared in The Archers, the longest running daily serial in the world. The Archers began its epic national journey on 1 January 1951.
But who was Graham Roberts?
Graham Roberts was an English actor born and raised in Chester. He was born on 10th October 1929 and sadly passed away on 28th October 2004. He was best known for working on BBC Radio 3 and Radio4. Included in these pieces of work was playing the part of George Barford, the gamekeeper, for 31 years on the iconic and hugely popular series, The Archers. Graham was educated at King’s School and in later years he studied at Bristol, then Manchester University.
He did also appear on TV and in films, including the hit series Z Cars. Later on in his career he also worked as a continuity announcer with Yorkshire Television until 1993, and Grampian Television.
Emily Booth –
Emily was born in Chester but grew up in Hastings in East Sussex. She is probably best known for her roles in cult films like Pervilla, Evil Aliens and Cradle of Fear. In addition she also appeared in the BAFTA nominated short film Inferno. Furthermore, she has been the host of several Channel 4 and satellite television shows. For more on Emily, take a look HERE.
Famous People From Chester – Adrian Bower
Someone contacted me yesterday and reminded me that I hadn’t included Adrian Bower in my famous people from Chester page. There was a good reason for that I replied. An oversight. Pure and simple.
So, to put matters right, here he is. Adrian Bower, born in Chester and star of Teachers. He is well known for his role as physical education and geography teacher Brian Steadman in the first three series of this popular British comedy series.
Adrian has also starred in “Gimme, Gimme, Gimme” and “The Last Kingdom” amongst other things. You can a full bio of Adrian HERE.
Helen Modern
Actress Helen was born in Chester in February 1983 but was mainly brought up in Preston. Here’s a quick summary of Helen’s roles.
Helen is probably best known for her recurring role as Naomi in British sitcom, Respectable on Channel Five. In 2006 Helen also starred in the eighth series of popular ITV1 drama Bad Girls as inmate Stella Gough, the daughter of the Governor, Joy Masterton. In addition, Helen has also had a recurring role in the BBC One daytime soap, Doctors (2005) as Diane Bishop. Other varied roles include No Angels, Wire in the Blood, The Chase, Messiah – The Harrowing, also starring Ken Stott and Maxine Peake and she also appeared as a mouthy rock chick, Sasha Read, on the Shed Productions programme Rock Rivals.
Welcome to my “Famous People From Chester” page Helen, even though you did a runner and emigrated to Preston.
John Steiner
Although now retired from the acting profession, Chester born actor, John Steiner regularly appeared (most memorably as a villain) in Italian movies back in the 70’s and 80’s. Let’s have a closer look shall we.
John originally started out in films after school with small parts in British productions. Among them was The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat (1966), Bedazzled (1967), and Work is a 4-Letter Word (1968).
His big break came when he portrayed the sly-eyed, manipulative property tycoon Beauty Smith in Lucio Fulci’s, Zanna Bianca (1972), White Fang in 1973, a role he re-prised in the sequel, Challenge to White Fang in 1974. Steiner went on to work with Fulci again when he played the role of a comical vampire Count Dragalescu in Dracula in the Provinces (1975), in which he was both hilarious and terrifying as a camp Count Dracula vamp. A camp vamp – that has a ring to it doesn’t it!!
Steiner continued to work in Italy through the 1970s, where some of the roles he portrayed were also some of the country’s most controversial entertainments. He went on to accept a role as a Nazi officer in Rino Di Silvestro’s Deported Women of the SS Special Section in 1976. This set John up to portray a series of roles as Nazi prison camp officers filmed in West Germany.
Other Roles
Steiner made a similar themed role in Tinto Brass’ Salon Kitty (1976) and later followed this up with a role in Caligula (1979). In Caligula, he played the balding, gauntly hideous-looking treasurer and financial advisor, Longinus, to the mad Roman Emperor Caligula (played by Malcom McDowell). After a commendable performance in Paolo Cavara’s 1976 thriller ‘Plot of Fear’, came ‘Shock.’ Steiner’s role in Shock (1977) was a welcome change of pace for him as he played a sympathetic airline pilot and family man.
After that, he went back to specialising as a tall and menacing looking villain. One such role came about when he appeared as the eccentric Italian film journalist Christiano Berti in Tenebrae (1982). This particular role remains as Steiner’s most celebrated film credit.
As the Italian film business diminished during the 1980s, Steiner’s roles in Italian and West German productions also diminished. To such an extent that by the early 1990s, Steiner had quit the acting arena and moved to Los Angeles, California, with his wife and teenage son. His new career saw him succeed as a real estate agent working out of Beverly Hills.
Welcome to Chester Lifestyle’s “Famous People From Chester” page John.
Still TV But From The World Of Reality TV
I must admit I don’t watch much reality TV. I definitely watch “I’m A Celebrity” and “Coach Trip” but that’s about it really. Any others? Very little, or none. So, when I was asked to add a TV reality star on my “Famous People From Chester” page, I had to have a closer look.
I now know that Channel 4’s “The Great British Bake Off” is a hugely popular programme. And, in it’s current series, the star of the show seems to be a young lady from Chester. As a result, say a warm “Hello” to the latest addition to the “Famous People From Chester” page.
For the second consecutive week, Steph Blackwell from Chester was again the shining star of the popular Channel 4 eat cake fest. Her lime sponges in the latest episode were “showstopping” by all accounts. So much so that it prompted Bake Off judge, Paul Hollywood, to say that “he had never tasted anything like it”.
High praise indeed. Still early days though, but even so, Steph has stepped up to the plate (or should that be the cake baking tin) and endeared herself to the public with some aplomb.
Well done on the show so far Steph. Long may it continue. And a warm welcome to my “Famous People From Chester” page.
Sort of from reality I guess we have……..
Famous People From Chester – Ainsley Harriott
A bit of a cheat again maybe as Ainsley Harriott is not originally from Chester, but he lives here now. Well, on the outskirts to be exact. He is regularly spotted in and around town so I guess a place on Chester Lifestyle is allowed.
What am I saying, of course it’s allowed. My website, my rules!!! So, a big welcome to our Famous People From Chester page, honorary member – Ainsley Harriott. Star of Can’t Cook, Won’t Cook and Ready Steady Cook and an MBE no less. Nice one Ainsley, welcome aboard.
A Famous BBC Presenter-Famous People From Chester
If you’ve ever been munching your cornflakes in the morning while watching BBC Breakfast television and think……I know that lady from somewhere…..it’s a fair chance you are looking at Louise Minchin.
Quite often presenting alongside Dan Walker, Louise is a regular on the breakfast settee. Another worthy candidate to our Famous People From Chester page. Welcome Louise.
Also From The BBC
Yes, here’s another BBC regular. Although from the BBC, now her fame is enhanced by an inclusion on this prestigious “Famous People From Chester” page. Say ‘hello’ to meteorologist, Helen Willetts.
Born in Chester, Helen moved to Colwyn Bay shortly after, where she grew up. Nevertheless, being born in Chester more than qualifies Helen for this sought after (ahem…..cough…..cough….splutter…..splutter!!) accolade. And as you will also know by now. My website, my rules!!!
Helen attended school at Eirias High School in Colwyn Bay. After which she went to Nottingham University, where the road to meteorology and the BBC began in earnest. Welcome to our “Famous People From Chester” page Helen.
A Popular Presenter From Satellite TV
Not only a popular presenter from satellite TV but also, an addition from the glamourous world of beauty pageants as well. Now I know that everyone worthy of their appearance on my “Famous People From Chester” page are all glamourous in their own right (especially you Boris!!! – NB, carry on reading to find out more about our handsome boy, Boris), but being an ex Miss UK and a Miss World runner-up should be enough to place this young lady in the genre of the glamour arena. If such a category exists.
Anyway, a big welcome therefore to Claire Smith. Claire became Miss UK in 1992 and from there went on to become Miss World runner-up. How’s that for an achievement. After leaving the world of beauty pageants, Claire went on to become a TV presenter. Over the years Claire has presented on Sky TV, Granada, CNN, Channel 4 and Channel Five to name a few channels.
Successful Businesswoman
Claire is also a successful businesswoman both here in the UK and overseas.
Now here’s a bit of information that Claire won’t remember, but I do. We’ve actually met and sort of had a drink together. Back in the days of Joe’s Wine Bar, on a Saturday afternoon. Claire was in there with her boyfriend at the time, a fella I have also known for some years.
While he was talking business with one of his colleagues, Claire was sat at the bar sipping her drink. Being a gentleman I struck up a conversation with her in an attempt to avoid her feeling a bit left out for however long her fella’s chat continued. As it happened, his chat with his colleagues was quite a lengthy conflab. So we chatted for a fair bit of time. Consequently, I can say with some authority therefore, that Claire is also a lovely person and someone I really enjoyed having a good chat with.
Sorted The World Out…..As You Do
Down to earth and chatty, we enjoyed “sorting the world out” for some time. As I say, I remember it, but no doubt Claire will probably draw a blank.
Ah well, the important thing as far as Claire is concerned isn’t to remember such a passing conversation. The important thing is to know that she is now a member of our “Famous People From Chester” elite club. Well, I think it’s elite. Welcome to “Famous People From Chester” Claire.
Also from TV, but a somewhat diverse introduction maybe. Let’s have a look at……
Our Latest Addition
Come on now, if you were to guess from the introduction at the top of the page, who would you really have plumped for? I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t have been this famous, TV screen legend – Popeye The Sailor Man. Who? Some may be saying. “But you can’t include him” may be the cry from others, “he’s not from Chester, England.” But, as I keep saying – my website, my rules. And, without doubt, the world famous Popeye the Sailor Man does hail from Chester.
But, to be completely accurate, he hails from Chester, Illinois in the USA. And boy is he famous in Chester, Illinois!!
To such an extent that Popeye has had a 6-foot (1.8 m), 900-pound (410 kg) bronze statue of him erected in the Elzie C. Segar Memorial Park. A park, located next to Chester Bridge, that honours Popeye’s creator, Elzie Segar. Chester’s big event every year, with its population of around 6,800, is its annual Popeye Picnic and parade, held the weekend after Labor Day. Popeye fans travel from not only all over the United States of America but also fans from other parts of the world descend on Chester, Illinois to partake in the weekend activities. Most of the events and entertainment are free and all are family friendly.
If you would like reminding of Popeye the Sailor Man or haven’t heard of him but would like to, then take a look at this short video below….
And a quick message to all you youngsters out there. Don’t forget to eat your spinach. Welcome to our “Famous People From Chester” page Popeye.
From The World Of Sport
From the world of sport there are quite a few famous people from Chester. Football mainly. I could cheat a little bit and give Beth Tweddle a mention.
Beth Tweddle
Actually, Beth is from Bunbury, just outside Chester….so not really Chester. But it’s near enough I suppose. If I was being strictly accurate though I should mention that she was actually born in Johannesburg, South Africa, but moved to Bunbury as a young girl.
But what about Beth, other than she may or may not be from Chester. Well, Beth was one of the world’s most famous athletes up until her retirement from Athletics in August 2013.
Have a look here for some of her excellent achievements.
Beth Tweddle was the first female gymnast from Great Britain to win a medal at all of these world famous athletic events. The European Championships, World Championships, and Olympic Games.
In all, Beth represented Great Britain at three Olympic Games. She won the bronze medal in the 2012 Olympics on uneven bars. She was also the 2006 and 2010 World Champion on the uneven bars and the 2009 World Champion on floor exercise.
Some great achievements.
Danny Murphy – Famous People From Chester
Danny has played many games for several clubs but is maybe most noteworthy for his appearances for Liverpool. Danny fulfilled his boyhood dream in playing for the team he supported. Here he is in action for Liverpool, scoring some rather excellent goals…..
In addition to Liverpool, Danny also played for Crewe, Tottenham Hotspur, Fulham, Charlton and Blackburn Rovers. Probably his best spell was at Liverpool – full details of his career can be seen HERE.
Paul and Ron Futcher
Mention Danny Murphy and you have to mention his uncles as well don’t you. Paul and Ron Futcher are rightly enlisted in this “Famous People From Chester” page. In fact I should have included them a long time ago. Not sure why I didn’t, so apologies for that omission.
Their footballing careers started at Chester in the early 70’s as Paul (central defender) and Ron (striker) made an immediate impact. An impact to such an extent that other clubs soon came sniffing.
In 1974 the twins were sold to Luton Town for a combined fee of £125,000. A great move for the twins who became legends at Luton as well as their hometown club. And a great move also for Chester at the time as £125,000 in those days was a huge fee for a club the size of Chester.
After Luton, they both moved on to Manchester City, where again they made an impact. In all they played a lot of games in their illustrious careers.
More specifically, you can see full details of Ron’s career HERE.
And Paul’s HERE. Sadly Paul is no longer with us as he passed away in November 2016 after a short illness. RIP Paul.
He is fondly remembered by fans of several clubs he graced and is often referred to as a club legend for those clubs.
Both players enjoyed distinguished careers and are a credit to Chester. Indeed they are rightly recognised as “famous people from Chester“.
Simon Hunt
My “little brother” Simon Hunt, who I’ve known all my life, was born in November 1962 in Chester. He comes from a footballing family with his father, Bobby and his late uncle, Mickey also being professional footballers. Simon’s playing career began at local rivals Wrexham, where he went on to play 108 games for the Welshmen, scoring 18 goals.
He left Wrexham in 1984 to further his career in Sweden. His Swedish clubs included IF Elfsborg, IK Brage and Gothenburg GAIS.
After his playing career ended, Simon went on to manage IK Brage and Kalmar FF.
Upon returning to the UK, Simon has held scouting positions with Ipswich Town, Tottenham Hotspur, Southampton and Derby. He also been Assistant Manager at Hearts in the Scottish Premier League and has been Sporting Director at West Bromwich Albion and Blackburn Rovers.
Currently Simon is scouting on a freelance basis having recently left his post with Nottingham Forest.
NB: Latest update – Simon is now enjoying life in a new role with Bristol City. Even more recent update, Simon has left Bristol City and is currently waiting for the end of this season (2020/2021) before considering his options for next season.
And an even more “hot off the press” 2022 update. Simon has left Bristol City and is continuing with his own freelance options.
Tom Heaton –
At the time of writing, Tom is the current first choice goalkeeper for Burnley in addition to being an England international. He began his career at Manchester United without playing for their first team and also featured for Cardiff and Bristol City amongst others. Since signing for Burnley he has gone on to become one of the best goalkeepers currently playing in the Premier League.
NB: Tom has now left Burnley and is currently plying his trade at Midlands giants, Aston Villa.
Ryan Shawcross –
Ryan began his career with Manchester United and made his first appearance for them against Crewe Alexandra in the League Cup. Since moving to Stoke City, Ryan went on to become a regular Premier League player. He has also made one international appearance for England at senior level.
Michael Owen –
Michael was born in Chester in December 1979, the son of former Chester player, Terry Owen. He played for several top clubs in world football and of course he was a regular for England for almost 10 years. Since retiring from football, he has become a successful racehorse breeder and owner. He is probably best known for his career at Liverpool. Catch some of his most noteworthy Liverpool moments here…..
For some rather impressive facts and figures and full details of his career, take a look HERE
Danny Collins
I have been reminded by a footie fan pal of mine that Danny Collins deserves a place in my “Famous People From Chester” page.
Seeing that Danny played in the Premier League and he was a full Welsh international then I would most definitely agree. Yes, born in Chester but a Wales international. Probably a parentage thing.
Danny enjoyed a long career spanning several clubs, including Chester, Sunderland, Ipswich Town, Nottingham Forest, Stoke City, West Ham, Rotherham and Grimsby Town.
For a full appreciation of Danny’s career, have a look at this impressive bio HERE.
When Is A Goal Not A Goal?
Or maybe that should read, “when is a non-goal, a goal.” That comment may well give football fans an idea as to the identity of this next entrant onto my “Famous People From Chester” page. It is none other than ex-Premier League referee, Mike Jones.
First though, what about Mike Jones’ refereeing career? Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t he referee Chester Sunday League games (and maybe some Saturday as well no doubt) when he was just 16 years of age? I’m fairly sure he did.
Anyway, apart from maybe disallowing one of my dodgy, non VAR aided, “offside” goals, or booking me for back chat, have a read of Mike’s career.
He was promoted to the Football League’s list of referees in 1997. The first match he officiated being Mansfield Town against Hull City in August of that year.
His first game at Wembley was in 2007 for the Football League Two play-off final between Bristol Rovers and Shrewsbury Town. Bristol Rovers won, 3–1. A sort of a claim to fame in that, Jones dismissed Shrewsbury’s Marc Tierney in the last minute for a second bookable offence. As a result, Tierney became only the second man to be sent off at the new Wembley.
In 2008 Jones became a Select Group referee. This meant that he would now be regularly refereeing games in the Premier League. His first match in England’s top flight was Hull City against Wigan Athletic.
Jones’ Dodgy Goal Decision
This incident may be the most significant reason fans will remember Mike Jones. In October 2009 he allowed a bizarre goal to stand after a Darren Bent shot for Sunderland against Liverpool, took a deflection off a beach ball which had been thrown onto the pitch by a fan in the Liverpool fans away end. It seems that everyone knew, apart from the one person who mattered most in this instance, that the goal should not have stood. As a result he was subsequently demoted for one week to officiate a match in the Football League Championship. The beach ball by the way now resides at England’s National Football Museum in Manchester.
Other highlights of his career include being the fourth official for the 2012 FA Cup Final, with fellow whistler, Phil Dowd, taking charge of the game.
Also, in the final moments of a 2013 Premier League game between Norwich City and Cardiff City, Cardiff’s goalkeeper David Marshall put the ball out of play to allow Norwich’s Alexander Tettey to receive treatment from a physio. Ricky van Wolfswinkel took the subsequent throw for Norwich and his teammate Leroy Fer tapped the ball into the net as Marshall looked on. The goal was disallowed by Jones who stated he had not blown his whistle to restart play. Cardiff’s manager, Malky Mackay, later praised Jones’ decision.
It was announced by former Premier League referee, Dermot Gallagher, that Jones refereed his final game on Saturday 5 May 2018 due to retirement. The match at The Hawthorns saw West Bromwich Albion beat Tottenham Hotspur 1–0.
Welcome to your place on my “Famous People From Chester” page Mike. Your greatest achievement ever perhaps?
Mike Parry
Just a quick comment regarding Talksport presenter Mike Parry. Born in Chester but no real mention on here other than to say his proper inclusion isn’t an oversight. People from Blacon will know the reason he doesn’t get a proper mention.
Martin Tyler
Still football but off the field. Martin Tyler is from Chester and has been a commentator on Sky Sports for many years. Since 1990 in fact.
Tyler’s commentating skills have seen him cover the Premier League and UEFA Champions League. In addition, he has also covered other domestic and international competitions.
Before Sky Sports, he had previously commentated for ITV in the 1970s and 80s. Not only TV either as he has provided his voice to the football video game series FIFA since 2006. In 2003, he was voted the FA Premier League Commentator of the Decade.
Chester FC Legend And Well Renowned Photographer
Have a read of this
Chester FC Legend
It isn’t often that someone can boast more than one memorable career. But this fella can. A well renowned photographer where his work saw him rub shoulders with some really well known celebrities. And a Chester FC legend, who for a long time held the record for the fastest FA Cup hat trick.
Many of you will have guessed who it is, but even so, it’s well worth having a read of this legend’s story. There’s too much to cover on this page alone, as Gary has his own dedicated blog post. I’m fairly sure that you won’t come across anyone else who has played golf with Alice Cooper, assisted Hollywood legend, Jayne Mansfield, with a wardrobe malfunction and sat on the bench at an FA Cup Final and so much more. What an incredible career, or to be more accurate, careers.
You can read the full fascinating story of Gary’s two careers HERE.
Sadly Gary is no longer with us as he passed away on 22/12/2019. RIP Gary. Hopefully this tribute to him on Chester Lifestyle will help to ensure his memory lives on.
Famous People From Chester From The World Of Rugby
There may be more but at the moment these are two famous people from Chester from the world of Rugby that I am aware of. Both of them are England internationals, so they will be well known to Rugby followers.
Just to clarify, I mean Rugby Union and not Rugby League. Have a look at these famous people from Chester Rugby stars:
Ben Foden – Famous People From Chester
An impressive career without a doubt for Ben Foden. Ben was born in Chester and was educated at Bishop Heber High School in Malpas, before moving on to the sixth form at Bromsgrove School. While at Bromsgrove Ben found that his teacher, Paul Mullan, was a big influence on his career. As was his father, Rob, who coached Ben and brother Tom’s youth team.
As a player Ben has been quite versatile. His playing career has been divided between playing at full back or scrum half in the main. Although he can also operate out on the wing.
During an interview in March 2009, Foden suggested that his best career option was to play full back.
Foden played for Cheshire and North of England U16s, and England U16s. He then went on to play for England U19s, and England Counties before going to represent England at U21 and full international level. In all he has played 34 times for England at senior level.
You can read all about Ben’s career HERE.
Rugby International Pat Sanderson
Another full England international is Pat Sanderson, brother of another former England international, Alex Sanderson.
Pat was born in Chester on 6 September 1977. As mentioned above, he is a former England international.
His early rugby union career really took off while at Bury Grammar School, Littleborough RUFC and then at Kirkham Grammar School. While at Kirkham he earned his first international cap for the England 16 Group Schools team.
In 1996 he joined Manchester Sale, now better known as Sale Sharks. He went on to be capped by England U21s and England A. He moved from Manchester Sale to Harlequins where he played in the 2001 Powergen Cup final, when Quins lost to Newcastle by 30–27.
After Harlequins he moved on to Worcester Warriors.
In total he played 16 times for England during a span of 1998 to 2007.

From The World Of Entertainment
Russ Abbot –
Probably one of Chester’s favourite “sons” Russ Abbot, was born Russ Roberts in 1947. He is most noteworthy as an English musician, comedian and actor.
He initially came to public notice during the 1970s as the singer and drummer with British comedy showband the Black Abbots. Since those early days, he subsequently went on to forge a prominent solo career as a television comedian with his own weekly show on British television. Full details of Russ’s career can be found HERE.
But before my next mention, a quick reference back to the days when Russ and his family lived in Saltney. Who was it that loaned his mother a hat to go to church on a Sunday morning now and then? No, no, not me. It was my Mum. Sunday morning Mass was a big thing in ours, and many others, households back in those days. And for the ladies, part of the occasion was a fine looking hat. On a few occasions my Mum helped Russ’s mother out in the very important hat department. My Mum had a multitude of hats for most occasions. I thought I’d throw that little snippet in.
A Chesterman By Name And A Chester Man By Birth
A warm welcome to my “Famous People From Chester” page to a very talented local musician, coincidentally a Chesterman by name as well as being a Chester man by birth. Ron Chesterman was born in Chester on 27th November 1939 and sadly left us on 16th March 2007, aged 67.
Ron is most famous for being the original double bass player for Strawberry Hills Boys. Spotted by Tony Hooper playing at the Enterprise Club in Chalk Farm, North London, he joined the band in 1964. Later, in 1967, the band changed their name to the so very well known name of The Strawbs. Ron stayed with The Strawbs until early 1970.
After his spell with The Strawbs, Ron, aka “Nobby,” joined Noel Murphy and Shaggis, under the unlikely name of Draught Porridge. After which, Ron moved away from the music scene and became an archivist here in his home town Chester.
You can find out more about Ron’s career and read a touching tribute to him on The Strawbs website by heading on over to HERE.
Talented Dancer – Chloe Hewitt
This young lady is certainly one very talented dancer. Or, I should say, STRICTLY speaking, this young lady is one very talented dancer and choreographer. I’m sure many of you have realised why I’ve put “STRICTLY” in capitals. Yes, you’ve got it, it’s because young (she’s 25 years of age), Chloe Hewitt, is one of the dancers from the hugely popular, “Strictly Come Dancing.”
You can read a short BBC bio of Chloe HERE. Chloe is the baby of the dancing team. But that doesn’t mean she is not as savvy as her more mature colleagues. No siree, Chloe is said to be, “sassy, sweet, but still well capable of showing us all how it’s done.”
Chloe first joined the Strictly family in 2016, Chloe remains the youngest professional female. Mind you, don’t let that fool you. She is still very focused, driven, feisty and packed with experience. She was only eight years old when the first series of Strictly aired, so that famous dancefloor is almost second nature to Chloe.
A popular dancer and choreographer and a star on one of the UK’s most popular TV programmes. What else could a young girl want? Oh, I know, being born in Chester, a place on the prestigious, “Famous People From Chester” page here on my Chester Lifestyle website.
Fear not Chloe, here’s your more than well deserved place. Welcome to my “Famous People From Chester” page. It’s great to have you here.
Bob Mills – Famous People From Chester
Bob Mills was born in Chester in June 1957 is probably best known as being a comedian. His most noteworthy appearances were in cult television series such as In Bed with Medinner and The Show. The Show was an attempt to do a non-fictional British version of The Larry Sanders Show. You can see full details of Bob’s career HERE.
Sharon Wallace
Some may say, how did I miss including Sharon Wallace on my Famous People From Chester page before now. Quite right too. I’m asking myself that. In my defence, as it is already a page now choc full with superstars and legends alike, the odd oversight is not unexpected. However, it’s fair to say that Sharron is well worth an addition to the exulted group.
But what about Sharon? Have a read of this short bio……
Sharon is the daughter of the well respected Chester guitarist, Geoff Dawson. Geoff performed with 60’s bands, Four Hits and a Miss, Jeannie and The Big Guys, The Pacemakers and The Dumkoffs to name a few.
Sharon herself has been on the circuit for 36 years, so it’s fair to say she is well experienced in a variety of venues.
Sharon’s first live gigs were in sunny Rhyl in 1984 where she embarked on a six week summer season contract. After which Sharon was one half of a duo who toured the length and breadth of the UK and visited Germany for six years performing for the British Forces.
Ever since then Sharon has worked regularly in the music industry and is still going strong.
A great career indeed Sharon. welcome to Chester Lifestyle’s Famous People From Chester Hall of Fame page. Now you’ve arrived!!!!
No photo I’m afraid. Sharon, if you’re reading please send us a photo. Ta!!!
James McVey
Also from the world of music. James McVey, lead guitarist and backing vocalist from the band, The Vamps. OK, I know he resides in Bournemouth, but where was he born? Yes, born in Chester but moved to Bournemouth at the age of 4. So, as per the rules of this website (i.e. my website so my rules goes!!!), young James deserves a place on this prestigious page (well, I think it’s prestigious anyway).
I also remember seeing James in I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. I’m showing my age. I know him only from the reality classic and not from his band, The Vamps.
Anyway, welcome to our Famous People From Chester page on Chester Lifestyle. Feel free to add that to your CV!!!
Lee Latchford Evans
All Steps fans will know who this is. It is one of the five band members, Lee Latchford Evans. But would they also know that he was born in Chester on 28th January 1975. It should be pointed out that his name is not a double-barrel surname. Latchford is his middle name.
Quite an unusual name to choose you may think. But not when you know that the name was taken in tribute to one of his father’s favourite footballers. Back in the 1970’s the Latchford family boasted not one, but three professional footballers. Two goalkeepers, David (Birmingham City), Peter (Glasgow Celtic) and Bob (Everton). Lee’s “Latchford” is in tribute to Bob.
His occupation(s) has been listed as singer, songwriter, dancer, stage actor, kickboxer, celebrity personal trainer. You can see more of Lee and his career, early life and personal life HERE.
Bill Haley
Yes indeed, that Bill Haley. “One O’Clock; “Two O,Clock; “Three O’Clock Rock” and all that. But how is Bill Haley ticking the boxes to be featured on such a prestigious “Famous People From Chester” page (OK, that’s just me bigging up my own page. But if I don’t….who will?).
Even by my own “stretching a Chester connection” standards, this one is maybe a bit more tenuous than some of the others who moved to or from Chester. But nevertheless, Bill Haley from “Bill Haley and The Comets” fame actually lived in Chester in 1932 for about 8 years from the age of 7. At 15 though he then commenced his life on the road with his guitar.
Oh, I forgot to mention. The Chester he lived in wasn’t Chester, England. Nope, sorry. It was Chester, Pennsylvania. Still Chester though. And to repeat my often mentioned mantra – “my website, my rules.”
Welcome to Chester Lifestyle’s “Famous People From Chester” page, Bill.
You can find out more about our Bill and his relatively short-lived home HERE.
Billy May – Honorary Member
Yes, even though Billy May was from the Wirral and not from Chester, it is felt that he deserves an honorary mention on this special page.
Why you may ask? Billy was a hugely talented singer for decades and many of his performances were in and around the Chester area.
There is a special blog post in Billy’s honour on this website. You can see more about Billy and get an indication of how popular he was. To read more, head on over to HERE.
Sadly, Billy recently passed away on 6th December 2019. RIP Billy.
Famous People From Chester – A Member Of The Aristocracy No Less
Indeed, a member of our country’s aristocracy is well worthy of a place on our Famous People From Chester page. Introducing, if he needs any introduction, the 7th Duke of Westminster, Hugh Grosvenor.
Not much to report about his private life as he keeps his private life very much private. And why not. As a businessman though, his profile is very much well known in the public domain. Said to be worth (himself and his family) an estimated £10.1 billion, Hugh became the 7th Duke at the age of 25 after the death of his father, Gerald, in 2016.
A shedload of money, young, good looking, plenty of profitable business interests, a neat and tidy gaff just outside of town and now the ultimate accolade. A place on Chester Lifestyle’s “Famous People From Chester” page!!! Could life get any better!!!
If you would to read more about our Hugh, then have a read of this blog post I wrote about the Grosvenors and Chester HERE.
From The World Of Politics
No political statement to be made from me either way, other than to welcome the current Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock. Born in Chester, Matt attended Farndon County Primary school, then the private, independent Kings School.
His family own (or owned, not sure if they still do), a software company. A company he worked for before getting into politics. His rise up the political ladder is quite impressive. And it’s something he can look back on with pride in years to come. A great achievement all said and done. As great an achievement as making it onto our “Famous People From Chester” page though? Hmmm……not sure about that!!!!
Chester Born Author – Bryan Lawson
I don’t know how I missed mentioning Bryan Lawson in my original post. Maybe not as well known as some of our sporting stars, or indeed, those from the world of entertainment, but nevertheless, Brian is a well known author. And he is one of our own.
Here is a link – https://chesterlifestyle.com/without-trace-bryan-lawson/ to one of a few blog posts I made about Brian a while ago. In this post you can read about two of his novels – “A Degree of Death” and “Without Trace”.
A “Degree of Death” is actually based in Chester. Well worth checking out.
Another notable and worthy addition to our “Famous People From Chester” page.
From The World Of Engineering
Another bit of a cheat…..ish!!! From the world of Civil Engineering, the renowned Engineer, Thomas Brassey is worth an inclusion in our “Famous People From Chester” category.
Why is it a cheat? Well, he was actually born in Buerton – some 6 miles south of Chester. But here’s why it isn’t a cheat.
Because it’s my website and I can put whatever I like on it!!!!
No, no, no. That’s only a joke and it’s not the reason. The reason it’s not a cheat is because Thomas Brassey went to The Kings School in Chester from the age of 12.
But what was he famous for? Well, I imagine that at some time you have travelled on a train? If so, did you know that back in the 19th century, Thomas Brassey was responsible for building many of the world’s railways.
How impressive is that!!!
In fact by the year 1847, he had built about one-third of the railways in Britain. He died in 1870 but at the time of his death he had built one in every twenty miles of railway in the world. This is really incredible isn’t it.
In France alone he was responsible for three-quarters of the lines in France, and he was involved with many major lines in many other European countries. Not only Europe though. Canada, Australia, South America and India were other countries where he made his significant mark.
Not Only Railways
He also built the structures associated with those railways. These structures included docks, bridges, viaducts, stations, tunnels and drainage works.
As well as railway engineering, Brassey was also so very active in the development of steamships, mines, locomotive factories, marine telegraphy, and water supply and sewage systems.
Still in operation today, he built part of the London sewerage system. Maybe not so actively involved, but he was also a major shareholder in Brunel’s-The Great Eastern, the only ship large enough at the time to lay the first transatlantic telegraph cable across the North Atlantic, in 1864.
Wow!! That is one impressive CV isn’t it. Just six miles outside Chester or not, as many of his informative years were actually spent in Chester, we should be very proud of his achievements and welcome him with open arms to our “Famous People From Chester” page.
From The Medicine World
Here’s another update as at September 2019. This time from the medicine world. Did you know that a pioneering vegan scar healing cream was created by a plastic surgeon from Chester?
No, nor did I. But you do now. The healing cream is likely to revolutionise the way wounds are treated after surgery and injury. So far the cream has successfully negotiated a ground-breaking clinical trial.
So, who is the brains behind this amazing new healing cream? Step forward consultant plastic surgeon, Douglas McGeorge. Or, to be more accurate, Douglas McGeorge MBE. Douglas is an award winning plastic surgeon who practises at Nuffield Health’s Grosvenor Hospital. Before this position he used to run the cosmetic surgery unit at the Countess of Chester.
The plant based formula created dramatically improves scarring at a cellular level (in layman’s terms it reduces the thickness of scarring by 20% and redness by 40% within 4 to 6 weeks). But, in addition to that, and more significantly, the cream begins to work immediately when applied to the skin around a fresh wound. This is even before a scar has begun to form.
Mr McGeorge says, “the results are ground-breaking”
Well done Mr McGeorge – brilliant work – and a big welcome to our “Famous People From Chester” page.
Famous People From Chester – Another From The Medicine World
What’s the link between, The Queen’s School Chester, a famous neurosurgeon and Winnie The Pooh? Diana Beck, that’s what. A belated welcome to my “Famous People From Chester” page to Diana Beck. And who might Diana Beck be some of you may be asking? Read on for more information.
Diana Beck was born in 1900 in Hoole, Chester, to James Beck, a tailor, and Margaret Helena Kinloch. Between the years 1912 and 1919, Diana attended The Queen’s School before studying medicine at the London School of Medicine for Women. It was here that Diana won two prizes and a scholarship.
After graduating in 1925, Diana worked at the Royal Free Hospital as a house surgeon and then a surgical registrar throughout the 1930s. She chose to specialise in neurosurgery and trained under Hugh Cairns at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford. It is here where also acted as a general surgeon. Amongst her surgery duties was to provide treatment to injured soldiers during the war.
Diana Beck – First Award
In 1939, Diana was awarded the William Gibson Research Scholarship for Medical Women by the Royal Society of Medicine She used the platform of the grant awarded to undertake research in Oxford with Dorothy Stuart Russell.
She qualified at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, with prizes for medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, and was then awarded a postgraduate travelling scholarship.
Diana specialised in surgery and in 1930/31 she was elected a Fellow both of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. In 1938 she was invited to join the staff (of which she was the only woman member) of Professor (later Sir Hugh) Cairns, the neurosurgeon, at the Nuffield Department of Surgery at Oxford.
First Woman Neurosurgeon
Diana was then the only woman neurosurgeon in Western Europe and North America, and so outstanding was her work that in 1947 she was appointed consultant neurosurgeon to the Middlesex Hospital in London. It was said that this appointment was to be the first of its kind ever to be held by a woman.
Diana Beck And The Winnie The Pooh Connection
In 1952 Diana received attention in the press for performing surgery on A. A. Milne, the author of Winnie-the-Pooh, two months after he suffered a stroke. The Times newspaper praised her “remarkable piece of surgery”, but Milne’s biographer Ann Thwaite claimed that the surgery left him “partly paralyzed” with a “distinct change in character.”
Diana passed away on 3rd March 1956.
What a career Diana Beck had. Some real great achievements and claims to fame. A well worthy entrant to my Famous People From Chester page.
From The Medical World But Also From A Military Background
This sub heading may seem a bit of an odd combination as an introduction for another entrant into my “Famous People from Chester” page. But carry on reading though and I’ll explain.
There we were on our walk yesterday (a nice sunny Sunday afternoon – first weekend after second lockdown), when we passed a house on Hoole Road with scaffolding scaling up the front wall. A man was busily painting upstairs window frames. This in itself is not necessarily of note. But, as we passed, I noticed a plaque on the wall. And an interesting plaque it was.
It was a plaque proudly announcing that Leonard Cheshire, a highly decorated RAF pilot was born in this house. To give Leonard his full introduction, he was more formally known as “Geoffrey Leonard Cheshire, Baron Cheshire, VC, OM, DSO & Two Bars, DFC (7 September 1917 – 31 July 1992) was a highly decorated Royal Air Force (RAF) pilot and group captain during the Second World War, and a philanthropist. (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonard_Cheshire).
And he was born a mere five minutes from “our house.”
This background in it’s own right is well worthy of a belated entry to my Famous People From Chester page. But Leonard’s skills and talents didn’t stop in the military world only.
As impressive as his military background is, he did also have an extremely distinguished presence in charitable organisations. For instance, in 1948, Cheshire founded the charity now known as the Leonard Cheshire Disability. This is a charity which provides support to disabled people throughout the world.
At the end of his military career, Cheshire dedicated the rest of his life to supporting disabled people. Not only that, he combined this with lecturing on conflict resolution.
He was also involved with other charities. Such as:
Other organisations set up by Leonard Cheshire are:
The Ryder-Cheshire Foundation, set up by Leonard Cheshire and his wife Sue Ryder in 1959. Nowadays, it mainly operates in two fields: the rehabilitation of disabled people, through ENRYCH and the prevention and treatment of tuberculosis, through Target Tuberculosis. You can find out more about this charity he founded HERE.
Also, in 1953, Cheshire founded the Raphael Pilgrimage to enable sick and disabled people to travel to Lourdes.
In 1990, he then founded the UK charity the Memorial Fund for Disaster Relief. Cheshire is acknowledged on the album The Wall – Live in Berlin by former Pink Floyd member Roger Waters. The concert launched and benefited the charity. Cheshire opened this concert by blowing a Second World War whistle.
A fascinating career and a fascinating life. Leonard Cheshire was born on 7th September and passed away on 31st July 1992, aged 74. And, as we speak, the house in which he was born on Hoole Road is getting a nice makeover.
Welcome to my Chester Lifestyle – Famous People From Chester page Leonard Cheshire.
Here’s a mention for someone a bit furrier than most of the other entrants on this page. But, a famous entry nevertheless. Read on……..
Boris The Chimpanzee
How could we not include this TV legend. By popular demand say “Hello” to Boris The Chimpanzee. Boris as many of you will know is the star of the popular TV programme – “Secret Life Of The Zoo”
His journey to Chester Zoo is an interesting one. Boris, a West African chimpanzee, arrived at Chester Zoo in 1969. For the first three years of his life, Boris was living ‘across the pond’ with a family in Manhattan, New York. Before he was taken in by this family however Boris was first of all ‘living’ in a New York pet shop.
An American writer by the name of Hester Mundis saw Boris – at only a few months old – in the window of a New York pet shop covered in a blanket of shredded newspaper.
Hester fell in love with him almost instantly. She also realised that she wanted to provide him with a better life. Hence the first stage of his subsequent journey to Chester Zoo began as Hester took Boris home. It was here that Boris was raised for almost three years.
However, things were to change after Hester found out that she was expecting her second child. Hester felt that it was now time that Boris deserved a permanent home, with other chimps. This consequently prompted her to start a search for the best place for him to live.
Boris’ journey to Chester Zoo had well and truly begun. The full story of Boris and his difficult start to life can be read about HERE.
Now at the age of 51, Boris is Chester Zoo’s oldest chimpanzee.
Boris The Star Of Secret Life Of The Zoo
His appearances on “Secret Life Of The Zoo” has endeared him to millions of viewers. If you haven’t yet seen this “star” in “Secret Life Of The Zoo” here is a clip of him doing what he does best…….entertaining his public.
**2024 UPDATE** Sad news to report. Boris the legend that he is, sadly passed away in July 2024 (25th July) at the ripe old age of 58. RIP Boris.
What About The Others
As famous as Boris is, should we not also mention all the other stars of “Secret Life Of The Zoo” – both two legged and four legged. After all, without them there would not be a programme would there.
So, in recognition of all the stars from “Secret Life Of The Zoo” who are without doubt also “famous people from Chester” in their own right, here’s a short video clip of the very popular and entertaining Channel 4 programme.
And Of Course – George Mottershead
How could I mention those hard working staff and animals of Chester Zoo and not mention the person who made it all possible. I am of course referring to the founder of Chester Zoo – George Mottershead.
Without a shadow of a doubt, George Mottershead is well worthy of a place on this “Famous People From Chester” page.
George Mottershead certainly brought new life to Chester when he opened the gates to Chester Zoo all those years ago. One remarkable man for sure considering his early days. In 1916 and I quote, “In October 1916, at the Battle of the Somme, Mottershead suffered a bullet wound to his neck, injuring his spine. He was initially paralysed, and recuperated at Highfield Military Hospital in Knotty Ash. Contrary to the expected medical prognosis he eventually recovered the ability to walk (with a limp) after three years in a wheelchair.“
Such incredible determination and dedication.
It was only right and fitting that his efforts and achievements have been recognised. In 1973 he received the OBE in the New Year’s Honours List. He was also awarded an honorary degree of Master of Science, and served as president of the International Union of Directors of Zoological Gardens (now the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums).
I think it’s fair to say that he has not only earned his place on my “Famous People From Chester” page, but he has also certainly more than earned his place in the history books.
Thank you Mr Mottershead and family for your huge contribution to our beautiful city.
Brutus The Morrisons Cat
Finally though for this list, here is someone else who is also very famous. He maybe won’t have been seen on the football pitch, or in films, but he is, nevertheless, famous. We are of course talking about – Brutus The Morrisons Cat.
Sadly Brutus passed away in January 2017 but not before leaving his mark on so many people.
Brutus is most noteworthy for his jaunts across the road from where he lived in Saltney, to Morrisons. Hence the name, Brutus The Morrisons Cat.
Brutus is so famous – he has his own Facebook page where he has over 12,000 followers.
Check out his Facebook page HERE
Furthermore, as a tribute to Brutus, Morrisons agreed to his legend living on. In memory, a statue of Brutus was unveiled on Sunday September 10th 2017 at 1pm. The unveiling was carried out by actor and comedian Ted Robbins.
More details HERE.
A really touching tribute to Brutus…..
We have probably unknowingly omitted quite a few other famous people from Chester. If so, please drop us a line with the details.
In Conclusion
You will probably recognise most, if not all, of these famous people from Chester. We will add to this list no doubt in due course.
Famous People From Chester – Update
I recently asked the question in my Twitter account if I had missed anyone and if I needed to update my “Famous People From Chester” page.
And, it would seem, I have missed a fair few famous names.
Bit by bit I will be updating this page with these new additions. To start the ball rolling I have been informed that there are two TV presenters I have omitted. One that is currently on ITV regional TV and one that used to be.
The one that is currently on ITV is a lady by the name of Lucy Meacock. And the one that used to work on a programme called Granada Reports – coincidentally the same programme that Lucy Meacock worked on – is a gentleman by the name of So Rahman. He now works for Al Jazeera TV.
As it happens, So Rahman, heralds from a couple of streets away from me. So, you can’t get that much more local than that can you.
A few more names to be added – coming soon.
