The Cheese Wedge – Best Of Luck Kevin
Anyone who has wandered into Chester Market over the last 44 years will no doubt have noticed one of the long standing stalwarts in there at some time or other. Kevin Williams and his so very popular cheese stall has been a feature for so long it would be so strange to not see him there. But, as a result of Kevin not being invited to join the new market, his absence will now be noticed. However, every cloud has a silver lining and all that. As one door closes, another opens, just to throw in another well known cliche. Although now left the market, Kevin has set up a new shop in Goss Street. In case you don’t know where that is, it is just off Watergate Street. His new shop is called The Cheese Wedge. So, let’s start by saying, best of luck to Kevin and all at The Cheese Wedge.
Best Of Luck To Kevin And All At The Cheese Wedge
In case you weren’t aware, Kevin opened his new shop on the 26th February. No surprise to hear that it has already gone down a storm in its new location. Fair dos to Kevin it must have been such a big step to negotiate after being so long in Chester Market. But after being refused a stall at the new market site, a Plan B had to be found.
But is Kevin happy with his Plan B? In his own words, he says that he “couldn’t be more pleased” after his new store recently opened. Kevin also went on to say that being denied a move to the new market had been “a blessing in disguise“. As I touched on above. Every cloud has a silver lining etc.
The Cheese Wedge – A Brief Background
It’s well known that Kevin has been a popular market trader for many, many years. Popular with customers and fellow stall holders. As it happens, Kevin had worked at the market since he was 14 when he initially had a Saturday job. Fast forward to today and Kevin feels that the rejection has worked out for the better as he begins his next, exciting chapter. He has found himself a great location in Goss Street and already his loyal customers are paying him visits and are continuing to enjoy his many products he has on offer.
His grand opening was a hit. As he was surrounded by a large crowd of well-wishers, including family, friends and regular customers, Kevin cut a ribbon to signal his new start. Of course, after so many years in the market Kevin will need to get familiar with his new surroundings. As he said after the grand opening:
“It feels strange not being in the market and I’ll certainly miss the camaraderie and banter among the remaining stallholders having been there for so long but I’m sure I’ll settle in at the new shop in the coming weeks. It’s been great to see so many regulars coming to see us today to wish us well and to also be joined by family and friends for our grand opening. Its been a fantastic day, we couldn’t be more pleased.”
The New Shop
The new shop features a smart, fresh looking, contemporary interior and cheese lovers will be happy to discover that they will find all of their favourites available alongside Kevin’s other popular and extensive range of products including chutneys, pickles and free-range eggs.
Moving to the new premises will also enable Kevin to add a few new ideas into the mix. Already there is talk that Kevin and his team will be holding regular events. Events like cheese and wine tastings and he also already has plans in place for a cheese and beer tasting to celebrate St Patrick’s Day later this month. This event will see a selection of Irish ales and cheese on offer. Sounds like a winner to me.
And yes there are some regrets about what leaving the market. There would bound to be after such a long time there. But Kevin is philosophical enough though as he said: “While we had hoped to have been a part of the new market, everything happens for a reason. The new shop has worked out well and gives us the scope to hold regular tasting events and collaborations with other local independent retailers. We’re really excited about the future and we’re looking forward to seeing what other new opportunities having the shop will open up for us.“
We Go Back A Long Way
As it happens Kevin and myself go back a long way. So, the messages of best wishes and good luck are heartfelt as well as being offers of support to a fellow local business. Oh and by the way, for those of you that don’t know, Kevin was also a good footballer back in the day. A fine midfielder full of energy and ability.
In fact, showing my age now. I even remember Kevin’s Dad, Gerald, from local football days. Gerald was a top man who offered so much to the local football community.
All in all, Kevin is a top bloke himself who deserves all the success as possible from his new venture. Best of luck Kevin, I hope you enjoy your new journey and all goes well. I’m sure it will.
