Sherlock Holmes The Irregulars
Now I think it’s a fair shout to announce that Sherlock Holmes is one of this country’s iconic and most popular literary characters. In other words, a national institution in some way. But who is (was) Sherlock Holmes? And what does he have to do with another national institution?
***NB*** for “another national institution” read “Chester Lifestyle“.
Only kidding of course. After all my humble website goes way beyond national boundaries!!! Again, only kidding!!
Right – back on track. Sherlock Holmes and his connection with our beautiful city?
Actually, Sherlock Holmes himself does not have a direct connection with Chester. Well, not as far as I am aware of. However, as his legend seemingly lives on and on, programmes and films will continue to be produced. That being so, we should give a mention to an upcoming Sherlock Holmes Netflix production in the offing called – The Irregulars.
Sherlock Holmes – The Irregulars
What exactly is Sherlock Holmes – The Irregulars? Fear not, this particular intrepid, bold reporter goes beyond the call of duty. Regular website visitors will be aware of that. He has dug that bit deeper to find out more. Not only that, but also discovered how it is of any interest to the people of Chester.
As already mentioned, The Irregulars is a new, upcoming Netflix TV production that will focus on the Baker Street Irregulars. The Irregulars are a gang of street children who helped Sherlock Holmes gather evidence for his cases. More than help it would seem. They are a group of street urchins who solve crimes for the iconic detective and Doctor Watson, while Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson take all the credit.
And in order to bring us this exciting new series, parts of it are being filmed in Chester. In Abbey Square in fact, and in Hoole. Flookersbrook to be precise.
Sherlock Holmes The Irregulars Filmed In Chester
So, there I was minding my own business making my way to the Co-Op in Hoole via a little amble through Flookersbrook and I came across……
Loads of TV film lighting and equipment trucks. And an army of technician type bods beavering away on the corner in and around the large, six bedroom, Victorian house, known as Spring Lodge, on the corner of Halkyn Road and Flookersbrook.
Being an inquisitive type, I started chatting to some of the crew (see…..already getting into the jargon). One that I was talking to said that they had been there for two days (Friday 31st January) and Monday (3rd February) – filming at the impressive looking dwelling.
Sherlock Holmes The Irregulars – What’s The Plot?
Now that would be telling wouldn’t it!!! Now that I’m an insider on the workings of high level filming I can’t possibly tell you. If I did I would have to kill you.
But suffice to say, I can divulge a snippet to whet the appetite. For the rest, you’ll have to tune in when it’s released.
The Irregulars is based on the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This American-made TV crime drama features the Baker Street Irregulars.
As the story goes, they are a gang of troubled teens in Victorian London who are manipulated into solving crimes by Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick, Dr Watson.
Daniel Furn from the Radio Times goes on to say: “Clearly a different take on Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective story. The Irregulars will feature elements of the supernatural as the characters have to save London, and each other, from a dark power.”
Playing the part of the world famous detective will be Henry Lloyd-Hughes, probably best known for playing psychopath Aaron Peel in Killing Eve, and Donovan in The Inbetweeners.
His co-star, sidekick is The Witcher‘s Royce Pierreson who plays a more of a sinister Doctor Watson.
When Can We See The Irregulars?
According to my ‘inside sources’ (sounds impressive that doesn’t it!!!), the series can be seen next Autumn. So, still a good way off then. As well as Chester, the series will be filmed in Liverpool, Stoke-on-Trent and Dorfold Hall, Nantwich – amongst other, not so local locations.
As me and my new found film contact inside man were discussing other important items in the news (we were talking footie actually), some of the actors playing the urchins came out of Spring Lodge as filming seemed to be coming to an end.
Some enterprising youngsters passed by and excitedly asked, “can I have your autograph please” as they spotted one of the stars of the day in action.
“Not now”, I replied. “I’m talking footie with my pal. Go and ask one of the actors”.
**NB**…..OK, hand on heart. The last two paragraphs didn’t really happen. Some actors did appear though. And I may have got you going for a short while as well. Who knows……maybe someday……what’s good for the Jeremy Vine Show and all that**
Sherlock Holmes – The Irregulars – Keep An Eye Out
So, keep an eye out on Netflix for when The Irregulars is released. In all seriousness it looks like the type of thing I would watch – so I’ll be checking what’s new on Netflix in a few months time.
Thanks to my crew ‘mucker’ who gave me a good insight into the whole filming, technical jargon thingy. It may look easy while we watch a programme but seeing all the wagons and all the equipment and support staff, there’s a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes. Apparently the equipment used in Flookersbrook was only ‘small fry’ to other productions.
Interesting job behind the scenes if you can get it.
***UPDATE*** – APRIL 2021. You can now see The Irregulars on Netflix. More details HERE.
Anyway, Chester and Hoole in the news. What else has been happening…..?
