Sad Update From Chester Zoo
A few short weeks after announcing the sad loss of two of their long established residents, another sad update from Chester Zoo. This time it is another elephant who has sadly passed away. Riva Hi Way, the four year old daughter of Sundara, who was suddenly taken ill and died a few weeks ago, has also passed away.
Understandably, staff at Chester Zoo are devastated after the sudden death. As with all members of the elephant herd, Riva was in good hands and received around the clock care and attention. As a part of this diligent care, Riva was given a routine blood test on Wednesday 21st August. Anomalies were detected during these blood tests that gave rise to concerns. Sufficient concerns that warranted more thorough and prompt investigations. It was during these additional procedures that Riva suddenly died under general anaesthetic. Despite the best efforts of her carers, nothing could be done to revive Riva. She was only four years old.
Sad Update From Chester Zoo
The medical team looking after the herd are now awaiting results from a series of further tests to try and find the cause of this tragic event. A spokesperson from the Zoo said, “we are desperate to find the answers. But it may take some time before we have full clarity on what happened due to the ongoing tests and the specialist nature of them.”
As with all the residents of Chester Zoo, Riva was much loved by so many and her loss is devastating. The team looking after the elephant herd and the vets are heartbroken.
Indeed, sad news from Chester Zoo. Let’s hope they find the cause of Riva’s death soon and hopefully find a way to prevent similar sad situations. Rest in peace Riva. You’re with your Mum now. She’ll look after you.
