Rare Baby Giraffe Born At Chester Zoo
It seems a long time since I’ve written a Chester Zoo post. And it has been a long time really. With us not being able to visit our world famous attraction, there hasn’t been a great deal to write about. But even in these troubled times there are some things you can still rely on happening. Mother Nature doing “her bit” of course is one. And, Chester Zoo pulling out all the stops in welcoming another endangered species baby into the world, is another. On that latter point, let us take this opportunity to welcome the arrival of a rare baby giraffe born at Chester Zoo.
More details of this celebratory news here.
Rare Baby Giraffe Born At Chester Zoo
Happy Days indeed for all those at Chester Zoo involved in the recent birth of a rare baby giraffe.
The spindly legged new arrival was born to 13-year-old mum Orla at 3am on 3 March 2021. The Rothschild’s giraffe calf arrived in the world when he landed on soft straw from a height of around 2m (6.5ft). It sounds painful, but rest assured, it wasn’t.
Chester Zoo also managed to capture the special moment on its CCTV system. As well as capturing the birth itself, the footage also captured the young male calf’s first wobbly steps and his precious first suckle.
It really must be an amazing experience to witness such a spectacular event. Anyone working in such an environment must ooze job satisfaction in spade loads.
Rare Baby Giraffe Born At Chester Zoo – Welcome To The World
Upon announcing his arrival, the new calf stood proud and tall at an already impressive 6ft tall and came in weighing 70kg. Giraffe experts say that they reckon he will grow to be 18ft and weigh over 1,000kg.
Sarah Roffe, Giraffe Team Manager at the zoo, said: “Giraffes give birth standing up and so their young receive quite a welcome to the world, dropping around six feet to the ground.
“Although this seems like a long way, the fall actually breaks the umbilical cord and helps to stimulate the calf’s first breath – it’s a dramatic entry but it’s just how they do it!
“The new calf has arrived at the end of a 15-month pregnancy for mum Orla and already he stands at 6ft – he could grow to be up to 18ft tall.”

By all accounts, new arrival and mother Orla are doing well. Let’s hope it won’t be long before we are able to go and visit the new arrival.
