Pubs In Chester – Good Times Bad Times
While writing about some of the Chester restaurants we have lost recently I got into a conversation with an old pal of mine and we had a good old reminisce about some of the pubs in Chester we have frequented over the years.
It was a good old chinwag and we had many laughs in reliving certain situations, certain pubs and certain individuals. Some of the recollections were a bit blurry. I put that down to the passing of time….only. Nothing to do with the amount of drink we may have had at the time.
Pubs In Chester
So, what about the pubs in Chester. I’ll be writing a few articles over the next few weeks about the pubs in Chester. Not just the pubs we have lost. It will include current pubs, pubs we have lost and pubs that we have sort of lost and are sort of current. These are pubs that are now known, or recognised, as something else from their former self. As an
example, one such pub would be the Bear and Billet for instance.
Who remembers the Bear and Billet from the late 70’s and 80’s? Who goes there now?
I think such a series of articles will be a bit of an enjoyable trip down Memory Lane for myself. Not just a trip down Memory Lane of course. Also, comments on today’s pubs will be just as relevant.
In a way, the posts will be a bit of free advertising for current day pubs. Mind you, depending on the comments, they could be a touch of negative advertising as well.
So be warned you pubs. Failure to top up my pint of cask will have you placed on the Naughty Step and on the “Hit List”. Nasty, nasty people!! Only kidding!!
Hopefully there will be some feedback to these posts. For instance, any input on such things like pubs with good food? Best cask ale pubs? Pubs that are dog friendly? Which pubs allow children? Good pubs for footie? Pubs in Chester with a fire? Pubs within the City Walls? And so on.
Now that last mention of good footie pubs should not of course be limited to footie only. Watching other sports is of particular interest to some Chester residents. What about these other sports?
For instance, a pal of mine from the Emerald Isle likes to watch Hurling and Gaelic Football. Where can he watch these games? I know of the St Werburgh’s Catholic Club, but where else?
What about good rugby pubs? Cricket maybe? (Come on England today by the way!!).
Which pubs have entertainment? Not enough in my humble opinion, but there you go. Pubs with quizzes and or Karaoke? Good value pubs? A fiver a pint!!! Forget that for me (and so many of my pals).
Pub Prices
On the topic of good value pubs I listened to an interesting concept by a pal of mine recently. One of the pubs he went to on a fairly regular basis increased the price of his favourite tipple from £3.30 a pint to £3.35. Not a massive increase necessarily (not like a certain hotel bar cum pub who increased their prices by silly amounts recently), but his logic was somewhat interesting, if maybe somewhat flawed.
His reasoning was, if the price increase of 5p was deemed to be insignificant for the punter, then so it would be for the bar. In other words what he was saying was why do it? He commented further in saying that what if you only went out with a tenner? With a tenner he was saying that he could have 3 pints at £3.30 a pint. At £3.35 a pint he would have to go home after 2. Is there a logic to that view?
New Fandangled Drinks…..e.g. Lager!!
There are so many variations to pubs nowadays as there are so many likes and dislikes for pub managers to consider. I mean for instance, who out there drinks that new fandangled girl’s drink….lager?? Only kidding…..it’s not a new fandangled drink!!
Pubs of course, or attending pubs, goes beyond just enjoying your favourite tipple. It goes without saying that it is such a good place for meeting people. I’ve met some pretty amazing characters over the years in pubs. Many of which have remained friends for many, many years.
Sometimes you can’t beat an “impromptu” session either when you bump into an old mucker. As an example, shades of 20/20 ring any bells Garry?
Anyway, I think there is much to cover in a series of articles on the theme of pubs in Chester. Just to be clear though these pubs in Chester articles will also extend to the suburbs. My knowledge or experience of some of these pubs (with the exception of Hoole pubs) may well be a bit sketchy so you may need to help me out.
So, pubs in Chester. Let me know what you think, either at the bottom of this post in the ‘Comments’ box, or in my Twitter account, or on my Facebook page.
Hope you like these articles about the pubs in Chester. I think I will enjoy writing them.
