Philadelphia Cream Cheese

I must admit, I do like my cheese. Just like so many others. Although my liking of cheese is quite varied, I must also admit I don’t like the minging, smelly types. You probably know what I mean. The blue type of cheeses. No siree…..not for me. Although I do know plenty of people who like to throw the equivalent of a donkeys years old, sweaty sock down their Gregory. But, as I say, definitely not for me. My cheese favourites also extends to a bit of the old cream cheese spreads as well. Like, as you’ve no doubt guessed from this article’s title, Philadelphia cream cheese. Who doesn’t like a bit of Philly with a few cheeky crackers, or a piece of warm, crusty bread. I do like a splurge of Philly on my celery stick as well.

Put me down for a bit of that!!

But why the rather seemingly strange blog post on a Chester based website? You know what, I just knew someone would ask that. And why not. Well, the answer is quite simply, New York. Cue much head scratching no doubt. Obscure answer or what!! Ah, not so obscure when I expand that short answer to, Chester Village, New York. I’m sure there may be someone, somewhere, that has just said, “Hmm, this could be interesting!!” Well, allow me to continue.

Philadelphia Cream Cheese

You may well now have gathered that the much loved and much scoffed, Philadelphia cream cheese, actually originates from Chester Village in New York. And regular readers of my website will have noticed that recently I have been focusing on some of the other Chester’s in the world. A while ago I wrote a blog post entitled – “We Are Not Alone.” In it I did stress that the article wasn’t anything to do with anything scary, like voices from the other side. Or that it wasn’t anything to do with little green men and ET and all that. No, We Are Not Alone is about the other Chester’s. And there are 36 of them. Of which, 33 are in the United States. No real surprise in that I suppose.

And as you will have no doubt sussed, one of the USA Chester’s is Chester, New York Village. I suppose, strictly speaking you could there were in fact 34 Chester’s in the USA as the village of Chester in New York, is actually located in a town called Chester. Both of which are in Orange County. A bit weird that isn’t it. A village called Chester, with a population at the 2020 census of 3,993 is located in a town called Chester, which has a population of 12,646.

And the village Chester is named after our very own Chester. It contains a historic section called Downtown Historic Chester. The Orange Heritage rail trail begins here at the site of the former Erie Railroad train station.

A tour of that historic section would be interesting wouldn’t it.

The Village of Chester

A brief of background about the home of Philadelphia cream cheese. The village of Chester was incorporated in 1892. Right at the hub of a dairy industry, the village claims to be the birthplace of Philadelphia Cream Cheese. But Philadelphia cream cheese wasn’t the only cheese produced. Other well known brand names produced in Chester included, Clover Brand, Cow Brand, D’isigny, Fromage De Brie, Neufchatel, Star Brand and World Brand.

Philadelphia Cream Cheese and Beyond

You know what, all this talk about cheese is getting me a bit peckish. I could just go with a bit of Philadelphia cream cheese on a cracker now. Or, hang on a moment, my taste buds are stretching beyond just the one spreadable variety. I’m now thinking, wouldn’t it be an idea to sample a few more, local cheeses.

Hmm….I’ve just had a thought. Watch this space as they say.
