Countess Of Chester Staff Survey
Some website visitors may have noticed that I’ve been missing in action recently. Nothing sinister, just been chocca block on other things recently. What do you mean, you haven’t noticed and asking me things like, “remind me, who are you?” So hurtful. Anyway, back in the saddle so to speak. And back to looking at some local events, places of interest and articles etc. Like reading the recent Cheshire Live article that focused on the Countess of Chester Staff Survey. Did this catch anyone else’s eye?
Maybe it’s worth a closer look.
Countess Of Chester Staff Survey
An interesting piece I’m sure to many. Let me again add the link to the Cheshire Live article. Bear in mind this article comes hot on the heels of a “much do more” critical report. But with regard to the staff survey report, the results showed that the Countess were ‘among the worst in the country‘ in terms of a working environment. In fact one comment was particularly telling – i.e. it “reveals a toxic working environment at the hospital.”
Many of you will have your own experiences and thoughts. On a more general note, this is just one of the comments in the article that caught my eye was, “Inspectors said highlighted issues “particularly in career progression, equal opportunity for promotion and harassment, bullying or abuse from staff.” Pretty damning I’d say. But is it a true reflection and is it really representative? Based on the report, you’d have to say it was.
I recently spoke with a very distraught young member of staff who claimed that they were being bullied. They presented their case to line management and HR. The outcome? The line manager concerned suggested that the complainant was “ditzy and that they were a “drama attention seeker.” Not ideal from the staff member’s point of view. The follow up to that was that they left the Trust.
Everything In Context
Of course, the above situation may be countered by a more sympathetic approach from a different line manager. However, using the information we all have, in other words, the information in the article, huge improvements are required. I don’t work at the Countess but I do several people that do.
Other than the bullying complainant am I aware of any other employees thoughts about their working environment and the treatment they receive from their line management? Yes, I am aware. The verdict? To keep it simple, the feedback I’ve heard echoes the, “among the worst in the country” and that there was a “toxic working environment at the hospital.” Not my words, but the words of staff members.
Can the environment be improved on? Well, looking at the report and the general feeling, it has to doesn’t it? Will it though? Only time will tell. Watch this space. A topic worth keeping an eye on.
In the meantime however, as a frequent Countess visitor (unfortunately), credit where credit is due. The treatment I’ve had from the medical staff has been very good. Again, some may have a different opinion, but from what I have found and with regard to inpatient and outpatient treatment – mainly good comments from me.
Would I work there though? From what I’ve heard and witnessed, no I wouldn’t. And I’ve worked in a lot of places.
