Chester Zoo’s Hyrax Pups
What’s that? No post about Chester Zoo for how long!!! Well, maybe it’s because things have been quiet on the Zoo front? Yea, right. As if. When have we known things to be quiet at one of the world’s best attractions!! No siree. To prove the point, we have even more babies to tell you about. This time, Hyrax pups.
Chester Zoo’s Hyrax Pups
OK, hands up. Who didn’t go “Ooh”, or “Aaah” at this photo of the cuties? I’ll bet there’s not many of you who didn’t. And if you did – shame on you.
Another triumph for all the zoo keepers, vets and everyone else involved at Chester Zoo. Well done to you all. And of course, a huge well done to proud Mum (Daissie) and Dad (Nungu).
The, as yet unnamed pups were born last month and doing fine according to officials at the Zoo. Officials at the Zoo went on to say that they only weighed 250g. That, as it happens, is about the same weight as a banana!!
Chester Zoo’s Hyrax Pups – Close Relatives
And which animal species would you say these cutie Hyrax pups were closely related to? Yes, you’ve got it. The elephant family!!! Hang on a minute, let me just check that. Yes, that is right. The elephant family. Well, I mean it’s clear as day isn’t it!!
I’ll preempt the question you are no doubt wanting to ask. How are they similar? Well, firstly, they have two big teeth which grow like tiny tusks.
Also, the structure of their skulls and the shape of their feet are also just like their elephant ancestors. There you go – obvious innit!!
Clever little so and so’s they are as well. According to conservation scientists, they have their own language made up of different sounds and tones. How cool is that!! A bit like Geordies I suppose (no offence to any Geordies – I think you have a great accent!!).
Anyway, welcome to the world…..and especially Chester Zoo, you newborn Hyrax pups. I can feel a Zoo visit coming on to take a peek at the young additions.
