The 70’s – Best Pubs In Chester – The Boathouse
Taking another trip down the “best pubs in Chester” Memory Lane. Of those old enough, who could forget the Boathouse in the early and mid 70’s? A truly memorable pub well run by Fred and Audrey Sims.
Without doubt the Boathouse was “the” pub to go to. Any night of the week, it was absolutely bouncing and was rightly up there as one of the best pubs in Chester. In fact, arguably, it was the best.
Most Popular Pubs In Chester? Wednesday to Sunday – The Boathouse.
As already mentioned, the Boathouse was such a popular pub every night of the week. However, from Wednesday to Sunday it was really the place to be. It was as if the weekend started on a Wednesday. One of the most noteworthy attractions of the Boathouse was the very popular “Scottish and Newcastle” beers of Scotch Bitter, Tartan Bitter and McEwans Bitter.
To many, Scotch Bitter was the most popular because it was the cheapest. One regular remembers only too well to go for the Scotch Bitter. This was because it was a bargain busting FIFTEEN pence (yes, fifteen), while Tartan was…wait for it….fifteen and a half pence!! Scandalous!!
Wednesday night started the weekend off with an ear splitting disco. After several good value pints of Scotch, many regulars set off to Kings nightclub. The beer was always a highlight of the Boathouse as was the atmosphere.
Although ideally located on the banks of the River Dee, the location sometimes became a problem. Particularly so in the winter if there was a lot of rain and wind. On occasions the river would rise that high boats bobbing up and down would become a problem. More than once, a rather lively boat would smash through a window causing more than physical damage to the pub. The ensuing closure of the pub meant one of the best pubs was off the circuit. What a nightmare!!
Like so many best pubs, the Boathouse has stood the test of time. Read what today’s visitors think by clicking HERE.
