Chester Duck Race 2024
Here’s a date for your diaries folks. Pen and paper at the ready, here we go. Saturday 20th April, 2024. And what’s happening then you may ask? A big clue in the article title. Yes, you got it, it’s the Chester Duck Race 2024. As I was heading out of The Countess last Monday, I spotted the advertising board pictured below. While taking a quick snap I got talking to one of the Countess event organisers to find out more. So, if you’re not sure what it’s all about, read on.
Chester Duck Race 2024
Let’s take a look at a bit of the background and information about the day itself. As already mentioned, the Chester Duck Race 2024 is being held on Saturday 20th April.
It is a free, great fun annual event aimed at raising money for a great cause – The Countess Charity.
As it is a duck race, no big surprise to find that it is taking place on water. In fact this fun family event will take place on the River Dee where, from the idyllic surroundings of the Groves, you can watch creatively attired, dressed up rubber duckies fight their way to finish first and be crowned the winner of The Chester Duck Race 2024.
The event is free but through the corporate sponsorship, The Countess Charity team use this fantastic, imaginative event to raise money for The Countess of Chester Hospital.
Chester Duck Race – How Does It Work?
How then do the organisers get the ducks to actually race? Bearing in mind that these are rubber ducks and no mechanical or battery powered assistance is allowed. Hmm…that is a good question then isn’t it. Well, according to the fund raiser I spoke with, there is a motor boat (or more than one?) that do a bit of spinning around (no, not you Kylie), which then creates a bit of water disturbance. Once there is a good bit of water movement, the race begins. Every man…..er, every duck for himself (herself). First past the winning line by the Bandstand is the winner.
Right, we know the date, but what about the time and other details?
Chester Duck Race Information
The sequence of events:
12 pm – 2 pm
- Viewing of the amazing ducks all imaginatively sponsored by local businesses. I am told there are some really imaginative ones this year.
- Fun activities for children including a colouring competition, hook a duck and a visit from duck Royalty. The one and only Puddle Duck.
3 pm
- The Chester Duck Race gets underway on the river, all bets are off!!
4 pm
- Prizes awarded to the winning ducks.
I wonder if all the ducks have names? If so, I wonder if there’s one called Kylie?
As many of us locals know, The Groves alongside the river is a very popular and very attractive location. While you are down there, why not check out all the other great things you can do. Go on a boat trip, have a bite to eat, a cheeky glass or two or an ice cream. After which, why not pop into the Grosvenor Park for some real rest and relaxation. Another popular beauty spot. In fact we have so many attractions in Chester and some wonderful places to visit.
Anyhow, make a date in your diary. Let’s hope we will finally have some good weather for the event. Enjoy the Chester Duck Race 2024 if you do have a look.
