Charity Football Match 7th July
Forget the Euros for a few hours and why not watch a good, honest, local charity football match coming up on 7th July. Many of you will already know that between 4th July and 7th July, you will be able to enjoy the many events served up by the Chester Festival of Ideas. As part of these inaugural celebrations, a charity football match has been arranged between a Chester and District Sunday League XI and a Chester and Wirral Football League XI.
Let’s have a look at a few more details. The first thing to note is the date, venue and kick off time. It is all kicking off at 11am on 7th July at the University of Chester’s ground on Parkgate Road, Chester.
In case you didn’t know, Parkgate Road is parallel to Liverpool Road.
Charity Football Match
I’ve mentioned the two teams taking part, but what else do you need to know about this soon to be fiercely contested local derby? I know from my footie playing and management days who the Chester and District Sunday League are. After all these years it’s good to see it is still going. A great deal of credit for that though must go to the members. In other words, the clubs and officials who take part.
And in particular, the driving force behind these clubs. A case in point, this charity match has been organised by the main man at the helm of Chester Sunday League’s oldest club, Dee Rangers. They must have been going for a long time as I remember playing against them!!
I know that Ryan, who runs the club, also plays. Believe me, taking on the responsibility of running a local football club isn’t easy. I know that from experience. Also, donning your boots and playing on top of all that takes the commitment to an extra level. And all for the love of the game and giving something to the community. I take my hat off to all involved.
Chester and Wirral Football League
Including as well of course those dedicated officials and players from the Chester and Wirral Football League (CWFL). I must admit, I don’t recall the CWFL when I was flying down the wing and whipping the crosses in (I think at this point anyone reading this who remembers me playing would be coughing and spluttering…..er…..me flying down the wing!! Yea, right).
However, they have been around a long time themselves. In fact their badge on their very informative and interesting CWFL website suggests that they have been going since 1894. Now that is a long time. Not even I was playing that long ago!! (the shorts were too long and baggy).
As the poster says, it is a battle between a Saturday League XI and the Sunday League XI. I’m going to do a “back in my day” mention here. If such a game existed back then, I would stick my neck out and predict a Sunday League win. Why would that be? Quite simply, back then the Sunday League was packed out with some very good players who plied their trade on a Saturday in nearby Welsh Leagues, the West Cheshire League and in some cases, the Zingari League in Liverpool. In short, a bigger pool of players to pick from.
Charity Football Match July 7th
But that was then. Back to today and our upcoming match, this is the first charity football match under the banner of the Chester Festival of Ideas. Wouldn’t it be great if it was made into a regular feature. Who knows, in future years this could be just one of the footballing feature matches to take place.
What’s to say, a mini competition could also be played? If say for instance, the Festival was to take place during term time, a variety of University based teams could take part. And why stop there. Maybe a Chester FC team could compete with players from their youth ranks.
But that’s getting ahead of ourselves. However, it is something to consider going forward. This year’s match will be etched into the Chester Festival of Ideas history books. Something that both League’s can be proud of and something to write about on their own websites.
Charity Football Match For KidsBank Chester
Moving away from the match for a moment though and let’s turn our attention to a very important message in the bottom right of the poster. The hugely important message of “Raising Funds for KidsBank Chester” is what it’s all about.
This local charity, based in Garden Lane, is a faith based organisation and registered charity who support families in need. Their mission is to alleviate the impact of childhood poverty by providing practical help as quickly as possible.
I’m sure you will all agree, a very worthy and important local charity. You can see more information about this worthy cause on the KidsBank website. Who knows, your donation could help a worthy young, talented footballer start out on the road to Premier League stardom.
As Kick Off Approaches
As kick off time of 11am on 7th July fast approaches, I will keep you up to date with any relevant news if there is anything significant to report.
Why not pop along and be entertained by local players full of endeavour, enthusiasm and not a small amount of skill. A leisurely spectacle that won’t be marred by players diving, feigning injury, VAR and Premier League referees. If you do go I hope you enjoy the game and see a few goals into the bargain.
