I was having a conversation in a local Hoole pub last weekend with a neighbour, who told me about quite a scary episode they encountered in their own home. It was suggested that a quick mention on here would be a good way to alert homeowners awareness. Read on and take note. And worth considering, let’s all try to be extra careful. And it may be a good idea to try and spread the word if you can. Also, if you know of any neighbours that are not necessarily internet savyy, maybe an elderly neighbour – then be extra, extra vigilant.

A quick explanation of what happened to our neighbour.

Be Extra Careful

Our neighbour explained that her partner and herself were at home one evening recently, having just arrived back from holiday. She went to bed and her partner had dozed off on the settee. At about 3:30am, the lady was awoken by a commotion downstairs. She went downstairs to find her partner shaken up and quite agitated. The reason for his shouting and bawling and aggressive nature at that time of the night was because some stranger had just walked into their house.

He was wearing a hooded coat or jacket so they couldn’t make out any features. Of course they normally lock their door but with the tiredness of just coming back off holiday, her partner unexpectedly fell asleep on the settee. These things happen.

But by all accounts, an effort to enter their house was attempted before a few weeks earlier. While sat at home, they became aware of someone trying their front door handle. On this occasion the door was locked, so obviously whoever it was, they moved on. This also happened at night, or early morning. Not sure exactly what time.

While we were talking someone else chipped in with a similar story. So, to repeat the message, be extra careful.

The area of Hoole we were talking about was the West Street, Ermine Road area. Are there similar attempts in other parts of Hoole? I’m not sure. Maybe a website visitor can answer that.

Is It A Regular Occurrence?

Is it a regular occurrence? The short answer is, I don’t know. Either way, if it is, then to repeat, be extra careful. If it’s not, then let’s try and stop it becoming so by – you got it, be extra careful.

I don’t know if there is a Homewatch scheme going on in West Street and Ermine Road area. If not, maybe there should be. I include the other streets that join these as well. Halkyn Road, Waverley Terrace etc. If there’s anyone with some security knowledge, like a police officer, reading this, maybe they can suggest some ideas to make our streets and homes extra secure. Can we, for instance, have communal CCTV cameras scanning up and down our streets? Maybe they already exist.

All in all, food for thought. We all know we should lock our doors but sometimes on occasions, you may just pop to see a neighbour a few doors away and leave the snip on. And, as mentioned above, we may inadvertently doze off before locking up.

It may well be that whoever is attempting breaking in is (are? Maybe more than one individual?) just playing the numbers game? Just trying every door as they walk by until they ‘get lucky.’ Or, are they carrying out some due diligence and targeting certain houses, or certain types of doors?

I think we all get the message now – and to repeat it, be extra careful. And to also repeat, please spread the word if you can. After all, these attempts may not only be restricted to Hoole.
