Baby Andean Bears Born At Chester Zoo
Get ready for a mega high reading on the Chester Zoo new babies cutometer. It could be off the scale. And the reason for that being? Two new baby Andean bears have been born at Chester Zoo. Although the news has only recently been made public, the cubs were in fact born in January. Since which time they have been carefully looked after by their parents until such time it was OK for their babes to face the public and the whole world. That time is now.
So, what do we know about Andean bears? More specifically, what do we know about these baby Andean bears? Carry on reading and you will find out more. Not only about our new babies, but you will also become aware of their famous, popular distant cousin.
Baby Andean Bears
The baby Andean bears born at Chester, a boy and a girl, are the very first twin Andean bear cubs to be born in the UK. Another great achievement by our world famous Chester Zoo. Bear conservationists at Chester Zoo have said that the birth of these little babies is “very, very special.”
Also, they have been named already. The young baby boy has been named Mateo, while his sister has been named Pacha. Pretty unique names don’t you think. A bit in keeping with their famous, distant cousin. I’m sure you’ve already guessed who I’m referring to, but I’ll tell you anyway. It was their distant cousin who was so proud of his name and famously said:
“It’s a very important name – I don’t expect there are many bears in the world called Paddington!”
There you go, Mateo and Pacha, you now have important names of your own.
Andean Bears – A Bit Of Info
Which brings me on to Andean bears generally for a moment. Experts estimate that there are fewer than 10,000 Andean bears remaining in the wild.
Andean bears are unique in that they are the only species of bear to inhabit South America. Mainly found in Peru, they are also found in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia however. As a result of their small population in the wild, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) listed them as vulnerable to extinction.
So even though Paddington was found at a London railway station of that same name, he is in fact from “deepest, darkest Peru.”
But as with so many species of animals we are so very fortunate to be able to see these amazing animals right here on our doorstep.
Baby Andean Bears – How Are They Doing?
Only a few weeks ago, during the zoo lockdown, a small team of keepers and vets managed to give the cubs a quick check over and they were very happy to report that both were given a clean bill of health.
Now the zoo has reopened, you now have your chance to visit and learn more about Andean bears and, of course, see the twins for yourselves. Normally, Andean bears are very shy, so even the zoo’s conservationists are so pleased to see them freely playing and being so full of energy. All under the careful gaze of doting mother, Lima. Who is also very well and doing an incredible job looking after the cubs by the way.
As Mateo and Pacha are being so well looked after by mother, Lima, will they need any other advice from their famous, distant cousin? Maybe, maybe not. I think for now though, this pearl of wisdom can be put on the back burner:
“A wise bear always keeps a marmalade sandwich in his hat in case of emergency”
Thanks Paddington, I think Lima has got this more than covered.
Welcome to the world Mateo and Pacha. And more specifically, welcome to Chester Zoo. No doubt all the staff at Chester Zoo will look after you as much as your Mum will. And of course you will also have some great advice from your famous cousin to help whenever necessary.
Thanks for reading folks. Stay safe everyone.
