Turn A Hobby Into A Career
Isn’t the concept behind this heading brilliant. Turn a hobby into a career. How cool is that? And how many of us have actually achieved this. Most of us go into a career where we have an interest, or a particular skill, or talent, that precludes our forthcoming career ambitions.
When we were in school, well at least in the era I was in school, we didn’t normally get the opportunity of turning a hobby into a career. I say “normally” as of course, we all did PE and as such, we played footie, or rugby, or cricket, or took part in athletics for instance. And from those classes, hobbies were often born. And becoming good in these classes (hobbies) careers in sport beckoned.
A case in point. In school I played in the same team as a future football international player, who also played in the top flight of English football. He also played in an FA Cup Final at Wembley.
It just goes to show. My on pitch words of encouragement of “stick with me kid and I’ll make you look good” worked!!! He went on to play at the highest level and I went on to get lumps kicked off me in local Saturday and Sunday leagues.
This Fella Didn’t Do Badly Either
Another lad who turned his footballing hobby into a half decent football career was a few years below us in school – three to be exact. He also went on to play for his country. And he did also win the odd trophy now and then. He also netted a few goals here and there. In doing so, he achieved most of that while playing for one of the biggest and best clubs in the world.
I’m not quite sure what Ian Rush is up to these days, but he’s another who managed to turn a hobby into a career.
Turn A Hobby Into A Career – And A One..And A Two…And A One, Two, Three
You could say the same about music lessons. Thinking about it, I wish we had music lessons in school. I mean being taught Latin (“amo; amas; amatus….etc….etc…)!!! What was that all about? How could you turn that into a hobby? Or a career for that matter. We were told that Latin was important if you wanted to become a doctor.
“But, I don’t want to be a doctor!!”
“Shut up and recite the verb ‘to love’ again, it’s important!!”
When was the last time you bumped into a career minded medic with a stethoscope around his neck telling you how much he loved you in Latin?
Latin was boring. Fall asleep and get nothing of value out of the lessons. Sorry, Miss Bradley. You were OK, but being taught Latin was crap.
Turn Your Hobby Into A Career
But aside from school and the connections to hobbies, what about our out of school interests and hobbies? Again, I think most careers are governed by an aptitude to something. Or some sort of a passing interest. Or a vocational calling (e.g. the medical profession). But a hobby into a career?
How many pathologists do you know that say it was also their hobby as well as their career?
Mind you, that would be worrying wouldn’t it. A pathologist saying that their career was an extension of their hobby!!! Or a taxidermist!!!
Even in a different, this time sporting, niche you could ask whether a football referee’s job is an extension of their hobby? I don’t mean an extension of a love of football. I mean was their dream hobby really meant to extend into a career of inefficiency, inconsistency and ineptitude?
Ooh….I’m a bitch aren’t I? And a frustrated footie fan as well obviously. Is there a good referee out there though?
Anyway, I digress. Or, as Alex Belfield would say, “but that’s not the reason you called.”
Back onto the topic of “turn your hobby into a career.” One of the things that has emerged out of this pandemic and the associated lockdowns, is that people have been able (or been forced) to make better use of their time.
With millions of people furloughed and stuck at home, time is a commodity that suddenly we have plenty of.
Box Sets Or A New Hobby?
And how have we been spending that extra time we have? Some have been binge viewing box set after box set. And having a cheeky little nibble at the same time. And why not. Within reason though.
While others have spent their newly found extra available hours to learn a new skill. Or, to spend more time on their favourite pastimes and hobbies. Or to get stuck into some new hobbies.
Which brings me on to.
Turn A Hobby Into A Career – Opportunity Knocks
The article below presents an excellent opportunity for youngsters in particular to turn a hobby into a career. Regular website visitor, John from Blacon, alerted me to this course. Thanks yet again John. Have a look, it could be something of huge interest looking ahead.
The following article is taken from “In Your Area” and is aimed at young people in Chester and surrounding areas with a view to future employment in the computer based gaming sector.
Interested young people will no doubt wish to follow this opportunity up.
Starting in September this year, the course capitalises on one of the fastest growing industries in the world. Computer gaming enthusiasts will soon be able to turn their hobby into a career with the launch of an exciting new course from Cheshire College.
Designed to support progression into employment in one of the world’s fastest growing industries, the new two-year, full-time Esports course will provide an in-depth study of the gaming sector.
Esports – Electronic Sports
This is is the collective term used to describe competitive gaming at a professional level, with the top e-sports players often being the very best in the world at their respective game.
Launching at their Chester and Crewe Campuses from September 2021, learners will develop a vast array of key skills including teamwork, communication, leadership skills, confidence building, decision making, reaction times, reading comprehension skills, cyber skills, dexterity and concentration.
Phil Farrington, Assistant Director – Visual and Performing Arts, commented:
“We’re extremely excited to be one of the only colleges in Cheshire offering an Esports course, which is already proving extremely popular with both current and prospective learners.
“During the two-year duration of the course, learners will have the opportunity to study in industry-standard environments and develop a sound understanding of the gaming industry, whilst forming a competitive Esports team, with entry into national competitions.”
In 2016, the global video game market was valued at £113 billion and by 2027, the industry is expected to have a revenue forecast of £219 billion. This expected growth within just a decade means that the sector is set to become one of the fastest growing in the world which could see Cheshire College Esports learners go on to become players, team coaches, shoutcasters and presenters, social media influencers, video production editors and data analysts.
