Smishing Bank Account Fraud
John from Blacon has been busy again. He has just sent me another vital Cheshire Police Alert. This one is about a smishing bank account fraud. I must admit, I’d not heard of smishing. So before going straight into the article, let’s explain what ‘smishing’ is. Thanks again John for the heads up.
Basically ‘smishing’ is a form of phishing. It involves a text message or phone number. Text messages are also known as SMS messages so a combination of SMS and phishing gives us ‘smishing.’ As simple as that really.
Now that we know, what about the smishing bank account fraud Cheshire Police alert? Carry on reading to find out more.
Smishing Bank Account Fraud
“We have had several reports of bank account ‘smishing’ fraud attempts. Victim has received a text message that appears to be from their own bank, asking to verify a transaction by texting back yes or no.
The victim then receives a telephone call and is told they must move money to a safe account. This is a scam! If you do receive a text or call from a person claiming to be from your bank then please do not give any personal information.
Hang up, leave the line for a few minutes or use a different phone and always use the telephone number from the back of your card or bank statement.

Smishing Bank Account Fraud – Stay Alert
Like so many of these scams this one may look a feasible request to some. But as I’ve said before with these type of messages. Do not reply to them. That may sound simplistic, but it can really be that simple. Like everyone else out there I have a list of contacts in my phone.
If a phone call or a text comes from another source, I don’t reply to them. Instead I will Google the number to see if it has already been reported as a scam. Very often it has been. If it hasn’t, I still ignore it anyway. Simple as that really.
Stay alert folks and keep tuning in to John’s very helpful Chester Crimewatch alerts. They are so important.
