Welcome Ambassadors
How cool are these young ladies. Chester’s very own “Welcome Ambassadors”
I must admit I’ve never met them myself but what a great idea. As a popular tourist city we should be looking for as many ways as possible to make our many, many visitors welcome. Something as relatively simple as this can go such a long way to not only making a visitors stay that bit more welcoming, but it will undoubtedly they will want to come again. And tell their friends and family.
Welcome Ambassadors
Having identified how good an idea “Welcome Ambassadors” is, let’s now introduce the ladies who are making such a great impact on our most welcome visitors.
Take a bow Monica Roman and Luka Jane Morrell. They have recently achieved a credible milestone of having welcomed their 100,000th visitor to the city centre.
The popular young ladies are instantly recognisable in their distinctive three piece suits and bowler hats. As well as greeting the many visitors our beautiful city enjoys, the proactive, helpful duo also point out the many attractions Chester has to offer and they guide visitors around the city centre.
On that note I could do with bumping into them. As my friends and family will testify, my sense of direction is awful. Even in my own city centre. It’s a bit of a standing joke. If ever anyone approaches to ask for directions somewhere my head goes. Don’t get me wrong, I will get them there eventually. But the quickest and shortest route? Nah….not a chance.
Oh No They’re Winding Their Window Down!!
One classic example was a few years ago when I was walking over Cow Lane Bridge. A car suddenly slowed up and the driver leant across to the passenger seat and I thought, “Oh no, they’re going to wind the window down to ask me for directions”
Sure enough, as soon as the window slid down I heard the inevitable question. Specifically the request was, “excuse me, can you tell me how to get to St Johns Street?”
I thought how unlucky are they. Of all the people they could have asked and they chose me. Cue a few moments of my doing a gawping goldfish impression.
Quick as a flash……ish, I sussed out a route by foot. Dead easy. Straight up Frodsham Street and turn right, then first left. Bingo!! As Aleksandr Orlov would say…..Simples!!!
But by car!!! Not a chance. I do drive, but this threw me. Anyhow, he asked someone sensible and (I assume) he made it to St John’s Street.
Anyway, I digress.
Welcome Ambassadors On A Mission
Back on to the subject of our intrepid “Welcome Ambassadors”. No doubt going about their tasks over and above their normal call of duties, their mission is to “make someone’s day”
I am assuming there are no Clint Eastwood-esque connotations here and that making someone’s day is to enable visitors to enjoy their visit as much as possible.
Another really impressive aspect of the service is that the young ladies are fluent in six European languages. So not only are they helping UK visitors but the warm welcome is extended to our many international guests.
The “Welcome Ambassadors” service is provided by CH1 Chester BID, the Business Improvement District for Chester City Centre. It is a great idea and one that should be warmly applauded. Monica and Luka’s positive attitudes and helpful approach has endeared them to many. And, so very importantly, has set Chester aside from so many other tourist towns and cities.
To have such a welcoming and personal service turn out to be such a success is a credit to those behind the idea and to Monica and Luka themselves. So very often the best ideas turn out to be the simplest.
Well done one and all.
A Request If I May
If by any chance ladies you see someone bending down with his head level with a car passenger window and there is a traffic jam forming behind – go help them out. It’s probably me directing an unsuspecting driver onto another magical mystery tour!!
