What’s Happening In Chester
Another quick recap of some of the events in and around Chester currently. Again it was hoped that there would be a separate article on some of these topics but time constraints and all that. There’s a certain event called Christmas around the corner so I need to spend a bit of time on these festivities. Whoever guessed “this probably means going to the pub”…..wrong!!! Well, I might have a quick snifter later on. But anyway, I digress. So, what’s happening in Chester nowadays?
What’s Happening In Chester
A quick update on the Christmas in case you didn’t know already. They are open up until next Saturday, the 22nd. So, if you are looking for a unique Christmas gift, you have a week to pop along to the Chester Christmas markets.
Supertrees Project
I would imagine this topic may well receive mixed reactions. The council planners have approved plans to give the Hoole Way roundabout (opposite Mecca bingo) a bit of an uplift.
It is now to be turned into an eco space by way of making three supertree sculptures the centrepiece of the roundabout. Each tree will be between 5 to 7 metres tall, inspired by similar attractions in Singapore.
Work begins on the makeover next month and is expected to be completed by the end of April or early May.
Christmas Is A Time For Giving
As the heading says, Christmas is a time for giving. That being the case, quite a lot of activities have been going on on the charity front.
Congratulations, well done and a big “thank you” to these caring people who have raised funds for a variety of charities.
Chester based baby and children swim school, Puddle Ducks, have raised an impressive £414 for Home Start Wirral. The funds were raised by a group of enthusiastic young swimmers who donned their favourite PJ’s and demonstrated water safety while fully clothed.
Most people encounter difficulties when in water fully clothed. The PJ demonstration provided a good indication of what it would be like to be in water fully clothed.
Well done everyone and I’m sure the youngsters had a great time demonstrating a valuable life saving skill.
Vicars Cross United Reformed Church
Generous grants from Allchurches Trust, Congregational and General Trust, Mersey Synod URC, WREN and contributions from the member’s budgets of Cheshire West and Chester councillors, Pamela Hall and Keith Board were made available for a new entrance at Vicars Cross United Reformed Church.
Cathedral Roads Play Area Blacon
WREN have also been involved in providing funding for the improvement works at the play areas across Blacon. WREN’s contribution is a very healthy £40,000.
The work at the Cathedral Roads play area is expected to last 12 weeks. The work involved will see new pieces of equipment installed, existing facilities repaired and repainted and improvements made to pedestrian pathways and to junior football pitches.
Bulletproof Agency Network
At their recent event, Bulletproof Agency Network donated a cheque for £1,003.68 to Cheshire’s Deafness Support Network. Great effort by one and all behind this great cause.
Don’t Forget The Needy Fur Babies
Over the festive period, Pets At Home will be taking part in a nationwide fundraising exercise to help raise money for rescue pets as part of the Support Adoption For Pets annual Santa Paws appeal.
Pets At Home Chester will be raising money for Wirral Animal Welfare. Donations can be made at the till point at the Pets At Home store. A 50p donation is enough to provide one Christmas dinner for a rescue pet.
Pet lovers can also donate £3 by texting BOWL01 to 70070, or an amount of their choosing at www.supportadoptionforpets.co.uk/santapaws
We’ve already got our Christmas stockings sorted for our four, much loved furry moggies.
Stay Safe At Christmas
Chester’s Safe Space scheme have announced that their mobile welfare unit will be offering support by appearing on the streets of Chester during the festive period.
Over the last two months, support has been available on Frodsham Street on a Saturday night, helping party-goers and revellers to stay safe. They will be making extra appearances during December. So, do everything you can yourself to stay safe but also be aware that this excellent support service is available in case of emergencies.
The extra dates to be aware of are 14th; 17th and 21st of December.
Chester Market
You may well already know I do love our Chester Market. I was in there last night and was talking to one of the well established stall owners I’ve known for many years.
He was telling me that there has been a massive upturn in Chester Market’s fortunes over the last 12 months. Things were looking quite bleak a year or so ago but thanks to the new stalls and food and drink places now regular features in the market, business is on the up.
So much so Chester Market is soon expecting it’s 1,000,000th visitor very soon. Counters were installed at the end of last year so a figure of 1,000,000 is amazing really and a great achievement.
The good thing about the stalls in Chester Market now is that they are all good quality stalls with great quality products which will encourage repeat visits from happy customers.
Well done to all the new and old stall holders. Long may the resurgence continue.
So, what’s happening in Chester – anything else to report?
Pat On The Back Time
Well done and a big pat on the back to young Tegan Hewitt, 18, from Saltney. Tegan received the prestigious Diana Award at a ceremony at Cardiff City Hall in recognition of here voluntary services at Saltney Town Football Club.
Tegan has helped out voluntarily for fours years by coaching young children. She also cuts the grass on the pitch and helps out with marking the pitch. Off the pitch, Tegan also organises off field events, events like the annual Saltney Town FC fun day.
Congratulations to Tegan for her well merited award.
We All Like A Good Chippy
We do like a good chippy don’t we. We’re lucky in that we have the excellent Hoole Fish Bar a few yards from our house.
Big congratulations though to Fish and Chips at Weston Grove who have found themselves in the final three for two top national ‘chippy’ awards.
They have been recognised in the “Best New Chip Shop” category and the “Field To Frier” for serving the perfect chip.
Excellent stuff folks – remember plenty of vinegar on mine!!
On The Sporting Front
What’s happening in Chester on the sporting front? Chester FC continue their impressive start to the 2018/19 season is one good bit of news to report. They are currently in 4th place in the National League North league table.
Looking at that table it is amazing to see so many ex-football league clubs in there. As well as Chester, you will also find York City, Darlington, Stockport County, Southport, Kidderminster and Bradford Park Avenue who have had better days in the football league in years gone by.
Such a tough league to get out of. So, sitting in 4th place is no mean feat. Onwards and upwards for the second part of the season and hopefully a big push towards promotion.
Chester RUFC
It’s not only Chester FC who seem to be on the up it seems. Chester RUFC’s first ever home victory over Sedgley Park by a 24-12 margin saw them reach the heady heights of four points off the summit of the Division Two North table.
Well done to both clubs. No doubt I’ll see Chester RUFC chairman, Dave Maloney, in the Cottage soon enough where he can tell me all about it.
No doubt I’ve missed a fair bit of what’s happening in Chester. The above though will give a few snippets of what’s going on. If you know of anything that is worthy of a special mention, then drop me a line.
