Victorian Freak Show
Here’s a date for your diaries folks. Saturday, 23rd November 2019. OK, have you made a note of the date? You have – brilliant!! So, what’s happening then? The title of the article gives you more than a big clue. Yes, you’ve got it – a Victorian Freak Show. And where is this rather unusual but interesting sounding event taking place. And what is a Victorian Freak Show? Carry on reading to find out more…….
Victorian Freak Show
The venue for this extravaganza is the Tudor Lounge, Mecca, Chester – start time 7:30pm. Before we go any further let’s get something very clear. The event is a chance to find out more about the history of the Victorian Freak Show. Note the word Victorian. It is not, and I repeat, it is not a chance to watch re-runs of the now defunct Jeremy Kyle show.
No siree. Although we have had some of our very own Cestrians appear on the JK Show (you know who you are), the evening will not be focusing on them. Even if the Jeremy Kyle Show was in itself a bit of a freak show.
This is a real deal delve into the archives of the origins and history of the Victorian Freak Show.
Allow me to elaborate a bit further by displaying the information given to me by the main man behind the event.
Take a bow, John Woolf, author of “The Wonders – Lifting The Curtain On The Freak Show, Circus And Victorian Age”. For more details of his book, have a look at the link in “Related Products” below.
Here’s what you can expect……
John Woolf And The Victorian Freak Show
John has sent me this…..
“Inside History Magazine is running an event in Chester- on Saturday 23
November, the Tudor Lounge Mecca Chester, 7:30pm – which is all about
history and the Victorian Freak Show!
Dr John Woolf himself will be giving the talk…….and here’s a brief snippet of what to expect:
Roll up! Roll up! Historian and author Dr John Woolf explores the
history of the Victorian Freak Show through the stories of the ‘freak
performers’ who graced the boards of this popular form of Victorian
entertainment.
From the world’s first international celebrity, a dwarf performer
endorsed by Queen Victoria, to the original ‘Siamese Twins’ who wowed the
medical world-this talk brings centre stage the stars that helped define
Queen Victoria’s age.
As mentioned above, Dr John Woolf is the author of The Wonders: Lifting the Curtain on the Freak Show, Circus and Victorian Age.
John will be on hand to sign books straight after the talk and Q&A.
Issues of the magazine will also be free to those who attend“.
Also, Nick Kevern, editor of Inside History Magazine, will introduce John with a talk of his own. More specifically, looking at how movies have depicted the freak show from horror and sympathy. There will be clips from Tod Browning’s Freaks as well!
But just to confirm again – there will be no reference to the Jeremy Kyle Show. No way. This is way too classy and more interesting than anything JK had to offer.
So, get yourselves along on Saturday 23rd November. It looks like something that is really different and something of real interest.
