Anyone living in Chester or visiting Chester will have noticed the ever growing presence of the University of Chester. There are more and more properties being taken up, or new builds popping up for the University of Chester students. To many people it is seen as a huge change to how Chester used to be not that many years ago. There are many who see the changes as a breath of fresh air. Whatever your views, you can’t hide from the fact that the University of Chester students are making an impact in our city.

On that note it is worth commenting on a really positive impact they have had.

So far, University of Chester students have raised a more than impressive £43,244 in this academic year alone. That is without doubt a brilliant achievement. Well done and a big “thank you” to those involved.The amount mentioned has been raised through the Chester Students’ Union (CSU) Sports Societies and, according to those that know, is still on the increase. Last year an impressive £24,617 was raised. So, this year we are currently looking at almost double the figure of last year.

In fact, in the first term alone, the students raised an amazing £21,170 – almost the whole of last year’s total. Mind you, it’s not a competition is it. Whatever they raise is a fantastic effort and very welcome. A total of 62 local and national causes have benefitted from the students efforts.Charities such as cancer research, local hospices, mental health charities and hospitals have been some of the recipients.

It is great to see as well that the students get to enjoy the events they arrange to generate funds. For instance, the Swimming and Water Polo Club raised £7,133 through various events. Events such as a bag pack, members skydiving and a Charity Gala. All monies raised going to various beneficiaries close to their members’ hearts.

Another fabulous fund raising event was the £1,000 raised for the charity MIND by the Tennis Club’s half marathon team.

Well done to all the University of Chester Students who have taken part and contributed to the impressive amount raised.

Their achievements are a far cry from my student days. Don’t get me wrong, I did raise money in my time as a student. But the main beneficiaries of Tetley’s, Wards Brewery, Bass to name a few do not count!!!
