Today’s Latest News From Chester
Long time no post folks. I’ve been somewhat busy on other things but I have been keeping an eye on the latest news from Chester. There’s been a fair few snippets to mention. So today’s latest news from Chester includes more great news from Chester Zoo, an update on Alfie Watts, a few messages of congratulations……and more.
I’ll take a look at some of them. Again, if you have any latest news from Chester to report yourself, or would like something in particular to be mentioned, then drop me a line.
I must admit I do try to keep away from any crime related stories if I can. I do post quite a few security type posts, normally courtesy of our intrepid, vigilant visitor, John from Blacon.
But, I tend to not post the more local, so and so has been banned from driving. Or, someone else has been arrested for drug offences. In the main I try to keep my posts as generally informational as I can and lighthearted wherever possible.
Having said that though, I think this particular crime related post is worth a mention. This is, in part, because I have posted about this incident before from a showing concern point of view. I am, of course, talking about young Alfie Watts.
Today’s Latest News From Chester
So, the first today’s latest news from Chester snippet is to report the outcome of the getaway driver’s trial. The driver, Keegan Doyle, has been jailed for three years and eight months.
In case you didn’t know, Doyle’s reckless driving resulted in Alfie being mown down and left fighting for his life after the collision on 6th January. He didn’t just run him down however. He left poor Alfie in the road suffering from what turned out to be life-changing injuries.
At the time though, Doyle wouldn’t have known how serious Alfie’s injuries were. For all he knew he may have fatally injured Alfie. But he chose to drive off. Not only that. He tried to hide a key piece of evidence – i.e. he tried to set the car on fire.
Not criminal mastermind stuff though as he left his wallet with his ID in it by the car.
Sufficient Punishment?
Is three years, eight months a sufficient punishment? I’m no legal expert so I don’t know how they got to that amount of time. But it may be that he will only serve maybe, say, a half of that time. He is now 23 years of age. So, he could still be only 25 when he is released.
Many years ahead of him to do whatever. Alfie on the other hand? As pointed out above, his injuries are life-changing. Both physically and mentally. At the age of 10 he should be doing all those enjoyable things 10 year-old boys do. Not having to face up to a lengthy period of recovery and having to cope with the physical and mental scars potentially for the rest of his life.
Was the sentence enough? I’ll let you decide. I have my own opinion on that.
Get Well Soon Alfie
A heartfelt “Get Well Soon ” message goes out to you Alfie. Stay strong young fella. Some day, hopefully, this will all be a distant memory and you get to enjoy all the good things in life that you have missed out on as a result of this horrible incident.
Alfie is not the only to suffer either. What a nightmare for his family and friends as well. I’m not a huge fan of cliche’s normally but if “time is a great healer” is a true working hypothesis then I hope the time since the accident has already helped you all in your healing process.
Stay strong one and all.
What Else In Today’s Latest News From Chester?
Is this an old cliche saying? “When the first shoots of spring appear, Chester Zoo presents a new baby giraffe”. Probably not, in fact, definitely not. But nevertheless, another new baby giraffe has been born at Chester Zoo.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. I love Chester Zoo. And I have often asked, “what are they feeding them down there?” Baby after baby, after baby. Chester Zoo are definitely doing their bit for world wildlife preservation.
A big warm welcome to the world then and in particular to Chester Zoo to the yet unnamed, endangered Rothschild’s baby giraffe.

They’re All At It!!!
There’s not only the birth of a rare baby giraffe to report. There was also two golf ball sized Radiated tortoise hatchlings making an appearance at Chester Zoo.
They are the first of their kind to be bred at the Zoo for seven years.
Congratulations Are In Order
A huge “well done” to Chester burns survivor, Catrin Pugh. Catrin, originally from Rossett, has become been signed up by cosmetics giants, Avon to become their face for a new beauty range launch. Congratulations, Catrin.
Congratulations as well to Pat Ryan in raising £300 in only three weeks for the Hospice Of The Good Shepherd in Backford. Pat organised a series of fund raisers as a thank you for the care she received recently.
I’ll Have Mine With Chips
A young Cheshire chef, 20 years old Sion Hughes, has enjoyed the success of a prestigious Junior Chef title. Sion won the title of “Junior Chef Of Wales 2019” at the recent “Welsh International Culinary Championships” held at Grwp Llandrillo Menai Rhos-on-Sea campus.
Next stop “MasterChef” maybe?
A Blast From The Past – Today’s Latest News From Chester
Ah…..deep sigh. I remember the days so well. Back in the 80’s waiting for the Golden Eagle to open at 5.30pm on a Saturday we would very often embark on a cultural trip up and down the River Dee on the tour trip boat The Lady Diana.
Strange how in those days we were so culturally minded and wildlife conscious. Apparently, as I later discovered, the bar on The Lady Diana was open between the hours of 3pm and 5.30pm (this was back in the days before all day opening). Go figure. I didn’t know that. If only I did. (NB: I can just picture regular reader Garry doing his elongated Pinocchio nose impression. No, honest Garry, I didn’t know!!).
Anyway, fast forward to today. Chester Boat, who include The Lady Diana as part of their fleet, passed a day of intense trials with ease. The trials were part of an annual survey undertaken by the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) after Chester Boat had recently fitted three new engines to it’s boats – The Lady Diana, Mark Twain and Jackie.
As well as giving the flotilla of boats a good checking over, the Chester Boat team successfully negotiated a series of searching questions. Well done folks.
Next time I’m down at The Groves I’ll have to check out The Lady Diana and indeed see if they have such a thing as a bar on there. Unless of course Garry knows already and he can tell me?
Today’s Latest News From Chester – I’m Sure There’s More
I know there will be many more latest news from Chester stories I have missed. Apologies if I’ve missed your particular story. But my fingers are aching now and I’m gagging for a brew.
As I said above, if you have any stories of note, then drop me a line.
And In Today’s Sports News
Finally though, on the sporting front. Mixed fortunes for Chester FC and Chester RUFC. On the plus side, Chester RUFC battered South Leicester at Hare Lane, 59-12. Not being a rugby fan myself, but isn’t that something like 8-2, or 9-2 in footie speak? If it is, then yes, that is emphatic. Well done Chester RUFC.
Not so good for Chester FC in the National League North. They actually got battered. This time it is footie speak and a 4-0 tonking saw Chester falling further down the table.
All not lost however, as they are still only 3 points away from a play-off place. Onwards and upwards fellas.
Until next time, I hope you enjoyed reading my today’s latest news from Chester round up.
