The Missing Goodies
Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been involved in some fairly nostalgic chats and trips down Memory Lane. For instance I found out that 26th July next year is exactly “?0” years to the day our year could officially leave school. In other words, the fifth year. No, the “?” mark isn’t a typo. Just me being secretive about the number of years. And why not. But this post isn’t about my old school days. No, but it is a Memory Lane throwback though. As the title says, it is about the missing goodies. When I say missing goodies I mean the sweets, chocolate bars and biscuits (to a lesser extent) I remember as a kid but you now no longer see.
Of course it is an age thing again. And, as I empty out my head I may forget some. But from my own recollections, let’s give my head a wobble.
The Missing Goodies
Let’s start with an old favourite of mine. Bar Six. “I beg your pardon young man.” No, no, I’m not being rude or offensive. Bar Six was a very popular, wafer, chocolate bar back when I was a little ‘un. As you can see from the image above, Bar Six was made by Cadbury’s. It was a creamy chocolate bar with a wafer centre and hazelnut cream. Quite similar to a Chunky Kit-Kat. Bar Six came in an orange wrapper and was wrapped in a soft foil.
Right, what else do we have? I can remember chocolate bars like Aztec; Fry Creams; Caramac; Wispa Mint; Banjo; Mint Cracknell to name just a few. The Fry Creams, if you remember were of two varieties. One was with five different flavoured centres, while the other was a mint flavoured one.
Oh, hang on, I’ve just thought of another classic – Double Decker. Who remembers them?
A bit of an acquired taste – Bourneville. This was a dark, plain chocolate bar.
Do they still sell Picnics? And what about Curly Wurly. Are they still a thing?
I remember in primary school we used to have a writing test whereby we had to write a short article in our best hand writing and it went off to Bourneville themselves, for them to judge as to who had the best handwriting. Those that won (not sure how many were picked) were presented with a tin of Bourneville chocolate bars. I can’t remember what else they did apart from the dark, plain chocolate bar.
The Missing Goodies – Sweets
Quite a few to recall here as well. Toffos to start off with. And what were those quite deep, square shaped chocolates called that came in a tube? Black Jacks and Mojos were also popular. Pear drops? Not sure if you see them anymore. Or those quite tangy lemon flavoured ones? I suppose they were called lemon drops? Are Bon Bon’s still knocking about?
I also remember there used to be a tube of sherbet with a stick of licorice in it, called a Sherbet Fountain. How many of the fellas remember the footie cards with a strip of chewing gum in the packet? We used to collect the cards and swap any spares we had. Wow, happy days.
Let me rattle off a few more sweets from yesteryear before thinking of a few biccies and savoury nibbles.
Who remembers these. Spangles, Peppermint Creams, Fruit Salads, Bazooka Joe, although the latter was a chewing gum but we can still refer to it as a sweet I suppose.
Biccies and Savouries
Not many here to recollect. There may be quite a few more but theses are the few I remember. Lincoln Biscuits, a quite a buttery tasting biccie with a load of circles of what can be described as dimples. Farley’s Rusks for little ‘uns. It may be that they’re still going. But as a little ‘un, Farley’s Rusks with hot milk!! Wow!!
Lemon Puffs were a lovely biscuit I also remember. Put me down for a few of them!!
Last but not least on the biccie front. My favourite biscuit years ago was a biscuit called Royal Scot. Made by McVities it had a very unique taste to it. A big favourite of mine and a biscuit I haven’t seen for years.
On the savoury front, all crisps really. Smith’s Crisps; Golden Wonder Crisps and Square Crisps. All very snackable and more-ish!!
How about that for a quick nostalgic look at the missing goodies. I can just imagine dieticians everywhere going, “oh no, what is he doing!!” While dentists are going, “bring it on!! Move patients for us”
