Hello folks, as already touched on, the coronavirus crisis has not slowed down the scammers or the fraudsters. Not at all. In fact, it seems like they have identified even more opportunities to cash in on their appalling scams. This one is a telephone scam alert as identified by Cheshire Police. It isn’t the only recent one. There is also an HMRC scam I will notify you about as soon as I get chance. But first, more on this recent telephone scam alert.
Thanks again to John for providing this vital and informational news bulletin. Many thanks as ever John.
Telephone Scam Alert From Cheshire Police
Here’s the Cheshire Police telephone scam alert in full. As always, spread the word if you can.
“Please be aware that we have received several reports of a telephone scam. The caller claims to be either the police or the victims bank.
If you are approached unexpectedly, whether that be face-to-face, over the phone or via email, remember to:
•Stop: Taking a moment to think before parting with your money or information could keep you safe.
•Challenge: Could it be fake? It is okay to reject, refuse or ignore any requests. Only criminals will try to rush or panic you.
•Protect: Contact your bank immediately if you think you have fallen victim to a scam and report it to the police or contact Action Fraud.
The police, or your bank, will NEVER ask you to withdraw money or transfer it to a different account. They will also never ask you to reveal your full banking password or PIN.
Do not click on links or attachments in unexpected or suspicious texts or emails, and you can confirm that requests are genuine by using a known number or email address to contact organisations directly.
To keep yourself secure online, ensure that you are using the latest software, apps and operating systems on your phones, tablets and laptops.
Update these regularly or set your devices to automatically update so that you do not have to worry.
Please share this information with your elderly friends and neighbours. Regards, Chester LPU. Message Sent By Beth George (Police, Great Boughton PCSO, Chester LPU)“
Telephone Scam Alert – Spread The Word
Many people reading such messages are already well versed in either spotting these scams. Or, being wary enough to avoid getting involved with them to the extent of ignoring them to be on the safe side. A sort of state of inertia if you like.
But don’t let’s forget the more vulnerable. Who are the more vulnerable? You will know yourself from your own circle of friends who you may think are more susceptible to falling for these scams. Or, to be on the safe side, don’t prejudge. If in doubt, put the message out. Put it out to all of your friends and contacts. After all, as they say forewarned is forearmed.
