Supertrees Sculptures
Well there we were leisurely ambling into town via Brook Street when we stopped just after The Stanley pub by the subway. What was that partly completed construction happening just to our right? The vigorous chin stroking prompted an inquisitive, “you alright mate?” from a passer-by. I was stroking for nearly as long as the CAMRA “chin-stroking” bitter gurus do before they finally decide on which pint they want. My passer-by helped me out. “They’re Supertrees Sculptures mate”. And what does that mean exactly? Well, carry on reading and you’ll find out!!!
Supertrees Sculptures
At the moment the subways on the Hoole Way Roundabout are closed while our Supertrees Sculptures are being erected. You know where I mean. On the one side of the dual carriageway, the subway by The Stanley pub. On the other side, the subway by Mecca Bingo.
The Supertrees Sculptures are in fact three new, 7.5 metres high sculptures designed to revamp the previously neglected garden area of the Hoole Way Roundabout.
They are just the beginning of a bigger revamp plan. The structure will entail various climbing plants taking root in the framework during the month of September. And with the plants there will be an increase in animal and insect activity and presence.
It is anticipated that the climbing plants will reach the top of the structures in 2 to 3 years time. Nearly created flower beds will also add to the displays. Volunteers have already planted seeds in the newly created flower beds. In time this will add a much improved decorative and environmentally friendly environment to an area that was once just full of overgrown weeds.
The overall scheme will also entail new landscaping around the trees. And a new mural in the subway itself.
An Improved Gateway Into The City Centre-Supertrees Sculptures
As Brook Street is a well used gateway to the city centre, it is felt that the area needs an uplift for locals and visitors alike.
The project is the brainchild of ForEST (For Eco Super Tress). It is supported by Cheshire West and Chester Council and funded by a variety of sources.
Let’s hope the project goes according to plan and starts to take shape soon. We wouldn’t want a crowd of chin strokers overlooking the subway with puzzled looks on their faces would we?
So, next time you are heading out in that part of town you will know what’s going on.
