Sad Week For Chester Zoo
The article title says it all really doesn’t it. What a sad week for Chester Zoo. While it’s always a pleasure and a privilege to announce the many new births that regularly occur at our world famous attraction, inevitably the Zoo will have to deal with their fair share of darker days. No doubt these days are quite frequent for the caring staff who work there. But for us public we don’t get to hear about every passing. So when well established and popular Zoo residents pass away, the news will understandably make the public domain. Last week it so happened that the Zoo came to break the news of not one, but two, deaths of stalwarts.
Sad Week For Chester Zoo
Firstly, we were hearing reports that 20 year old female elephant, Sundara Hi Way had suddenly sadly passed away. Sundara suddenly fell ill inside the zoo’s Elephants of the Asian Forest habitat on Friday 19 July 2024.
Both Animal care and veterinary teams rushed to help her but, despite doing everything they could to try and treat her, Sundara deteriorated rapidly and very sadly passed away.
An examination revealed that the cause of death was that she had twisted intestines. Unfortunately, it can onset very quickly and it is almost impossible to diagnose or treat in elephants. Sundara was always one of the first Chester Zoo residents everyone saw when entering the Zoo. She will be sorely missed. RIP Sundara.
You can read more of Sundara’s passing in this Chester Zoo link HERE.
And if the news of Sundara’s passing wasn’t bad enough, we got to hear of another huge blow just a few days later. The passing of the legend that was and will always be, Boris the Chimpanzee.
Sad Week For Chester Zoo – Boris The Legend Sadly Passes Away
The passing of Boris is indeed such very sad, tragic news for so many. However, for those of us of a certain age, maybe even more so as we grew up with Boris in our lives. Boris wasn’t just a Chester Zoo legend. He was a Chester legend. So much so, he is deservedly included in my Famous People From Chester page (my websites, my rules). Click through to that link and you will read about the journey Boris made to Chester Zoo in 1969 and much more aside.
Wow, that is incredible – 1969!! So many school trip visits to the Zoo would have seen so many of us around at that time hotfooting it to see the cute young chimpanzee going through the motions. This attraction and connection with the people of Chester and beyond continued for many years. Right up until this year, 2024. A huge part of mine and so many others lifetimes. That is why the passing of Boris is felt even more so by so many.
And let’s not forget the hurt felt by his family and friends. Our hearts go out to them as well. .
You can read a great Chester Zoo article celebrating the life of Boris HERE.
RIP Boris, you will always be remembered.
