Pubs and Restaurants Reopening

The heading has a certain ring to it doesn’t it. Pubs and Restaurants reopening. Deep sigh. And let me just say that again. Pubs and Restaurants reopening. I’m sure many of us have thought about that phrase for some time now. And the good news is, it isn’t too long to wait now.

Three weeks away for some pubs. To be precise, Monday, 12th April. I must stress though, the 12th April rule applies to only a select type of pubs and restaurants. Carry on reading for more information.

Pubs and Restaurants Reopening

But which pubs and restaurants are reopening on 12th April anyway? There are rules in place and the reopening does not apply to all pubs unfortunately. Here’s the official line, on April 12, some bars and restaurants will be allowed to reopen – but for outdoor service only.

Although your first, favourite pint may not seem too far off, I think it’s fair to say that a night at your local boozer is set to be dramatically different.

Here are the rules that pub landlords, landladies and punters must follow.

Pubs and Restaurants Reopening – What Is Classed As Outdoors?

As with the previous lifting of restrictions, the rule of six outside will apply once more. So, on that note, it’s important to know what is classed as ‘outdoors.’

‘Outdoors’ refers to private gardens and any other outdoor space, which includes beer gardens, cafes or restaurants with outdoor seating spaces. Also, hospitality areas in venues like zoos and theme parks, which are also due to reopen at this time, are included in this definition of outdoors. So, a few less restrictions for Chester Zoo to have to contend with. Hopefully that will get more customers through the gates.

But, here’s the question. How many pubs in Chester already fit that criteria?

Will a pub visit mean that you must have a “substantial meal” though? Not so, this time round. You can just meet for a drink as the Government scraps the rather vague “substantial meal” rule from earlier in the year.

The guidelines state that hospitality venues can serve people outdoors only and this time round people can just meet for a drink. No meal is necessary.

Will Social Distancing Rules Still Apply?

The simple answer to that, is yes.

The latest guidance says businesses reopening “must abide by the social contact rules” which does mean social distancing.

“There will be no need for customers to order a substantial meal with alcohol, and no curfew – although customers must order, eat and drink while seated,” the rules state.

That means venues must offer table service and propping up at the bar is off limits for a while longer.

When Boris Johnson introduced the dates for phased reopening of the hospitality industry, he went on to say: “The Government will continue to enforce restrictions and require businesses to demonstrate robust strategies for managing the risk of transmission and to ensure social distancing rules are followed.

“Local authorities and the police will continue to provide support and advice to newly reopened settings, enabling them to operate safely. Where businesses do not follow the rules, the appropriate enforcement action will be taken“.

Pubs and Restaurants Reopening – When Can We Eat And Drink Indoors?

Currently, the target date for pubs, bars and restaurants to fully reopen is expected to be from no earlier than May 17.

However, another proviso I’m afraid. These dates are subject to change depending on the data meeting England’s “four tests”.

The four tests for easing measures include the success of the vaccine rollout, evidence of vaccine efficacy, new variants and infection rates, which will be assessed by ministers before proceeding to the next step.

So, we’re not yet certain that May 17th will be the correct date. Mind you, for some pubs and restaurants, I would imagine the date may well be academic anyway, as they may well have already fallen by the wayside by then.

Back To Focusing On 12th April

I must admit I don’t know which pubs and restaurants tick the required boxes for a 12th April reopening. Take a look at the image on this page for instance. I took this photo of The Coach House, by the Town Hall, on Sunday just gone. I’m not sure what the real reason for the gazebo is.

But, if I was to hazard a guess, I would say it was in readiness for 12th April and to provide an opportunity to allow more people to visit the pub.

If that is the case, then why not. And, with pubs looking to get back to earning lost revenues as quickly as they can, how many more pubs are going to look for ideas to provide outdoor facilities?

Mind you, just increasing the outdoor seating areas won’t be enough. One simple reason for that of course is the great British weather. The Coach are well sorted with their gazebo. It not only provides additional outdoor seating, but it caters for the British weather, if (when) it rains.

Quite a bit of planning may well still need to be done before 12th April for some pubs and restaurants.

On the other hand, there may be some that will be prepared (can afford) to wait for 17th May. The target date for other pubs reopening.

Anyway, back onto the pubs and restaurants themselves. And, as I say, I don’t know them all, and I don’t know which ones already have, or will be providing, outdoor seating facilities. So, as I did in my “Grand Reopening” post from last July, I have listed the pubs and restaurants below.

Book Accordingly

Any that take your fancy, either for the 12th April reopening, or indeed, for the 17th May, then why not keep this list to hand. That way, you can give the pub or the restaurant a ring and check out their facilities. And, of course, book accordingly.

Pubs and Restaurants Reopening – A Useful List

As I’ve already said, I haven’t had time to check all pubs and restaurants in and around Chester. So, apologies if I’ve missed your favourite boozer or restaurant out.

Or, if you are the landlord, or landlady, of said establishment, then drop me a line with your contact details of the reopening of your own venue. I’ll gladly slot the information in.

Also, having checked on Google, some of the pubs on my original list did not have their phone number listed. And, again I must admit, I don’t know the full details of each pub’s opening. In other words, whether a pub will be doing food, whether you have to book and for how long you can stay and so on.

So, rather than me try and provide you with details that may not be 100% accurate anyway, I’ll list the pubs in alphabetical order along with their phone number. So, any pub of interest you can contact them directly. That sounds the best option all things considered.

By the way, I’ll do a similar thing with the restaurants and cafes. Just to mention as well, some of the venues may appear in more than one list. For instance, a pub may well appear in the restaurant list as well as they have been identified as both – e.g. the Bear and Billet. I’m sure you’ll suss it out.

Let’s not forget that this latest reopening will again be a big learning curve for everyone. Customers, pub landlords, restaurant owners and staff will no doubt all find it a bit weird. So, bear with it. I’m sure it will all fall into place. And when the 12th April comes and goes, things will be even more normal and familiar as punters and staff alike get to grips with the newness of it all.

If you are planning on having a few sherbets then remember to take it easy. Respect the other customers and the place that you are in and all their staff. Show consideration and remember the social distancing rules.

Oh, and for any fellas reading. Remember to always wash your hands after you’ve been to the loo!!! I’m not just saying it, but I always wash my hands. I’m always amazed though at those that don’t. In fact it’s the reason I won’t eat any freebie nuts if a pub kindly puts some out in bowls on a bar.

So fellas, read that bit again above. Always wash your hands after going to the loo!!!

Above all, when the 12th April is upon us, stay safe folks – and enjoy yourselves.
