Local Cricketer Remembered
Another sad post unfortunately. Only a few days ago I wrote about the sad passing of Chester FC legend, Grenville Millington. This post, although not about a professional local sportsman, is in recognition of a well known local cricketer at amateur level. The popular local cricketer remembered is ex-Christleton wicket keeper, Terry Jonas. As well as being a very good cricketer, Terry was a very popular member of the Hoole community. Let’s have a closer look at our local cricketer remembered.
Local Cricketer Remembered

Before we look at his cricketing connections, I’ll give a quick mention of Terry, the neighbour. Terry was one of those neighbours that everyone knew. He always had time for you. He would stop and have a chat and always showed genuine interest in your news and news about your family. Always had a smile on his face and always had a good word for everyone. More often than not he would walk past three or four times a day. Minimum. Always walking, always on the go. A lot of the times he would be wearing shorts, even when the weather was a bit on the chilly side.
Seeing Terry walking past was a regular neighbourhood feature. It was sort of part of your every day ritual. So of course it became very noticeable when Terry hadn’t been spotted for a few days. Many neighbours were concerned about Terry’s whereabouts. Eventually I managed to find out that Terry was in Ellesmere Port, Cottage Hospital through a friend of mine, who was also a local cricketer. I paid him a visit and, as ever, he seemed in good spirits. But sadly, not long after he passed away.
Terry Jonas Christleton Cricket Club
Christleton Cricket Club have announced Terry’s passing as the “passing of a true club legend.” Having joined the club from local rivals, County Officers, in 1980, Terry went on to serve the club in many capacities for forty plus years. Even after his playing career, as a well respected, talented wicket-keeper ended, Terry would help the club in any way he could. He would be regularly seen rolling the wicket and even clearing leaves away from the pitch. He would even grab the clippers and cut hedges. Without a doubt, he was dedicated and devoted to Christleton. Indeed a true club legend.
Christleton Cricket Club have posted a heartfelt tribute to their Life Member and Vice President here.
It won’t be the same not seeing you walk past our front window several times a day. We will always remember seeing you hastily walking past in your shorts when even in the coldest months of winter we would often say, “good grief, Terry’s just walked past in his shorts. He must be freezing.” Rest in Peace Terry, you will be sorely missed.
His funeral will be held at Chester Crematorium in Blacon on Tuesday 17th June at 1.20 pm, followed by light refreshments at Christleton Sports Club.
