This is not solely relating to the influx of students to Chester for a new term, but it is related. In light of a recent arrest as reported by Cheshire Police, females in particular need to be more aware. The arrest referred to can be read about more fully in this article HERE. Which will bring us on to the title of this article – details of the Hollie Guard App.

But first, some brief details of the arrest. Basically, the link above, is a statement from Cheshire Police announcing that a man has been arrested following sexual assaults in Chester. Detectives have arrested a man following reports of a man inappropriately touching women in Chester. Over the past two months Cheshire Police officers have received four reports of an unknown man following women in the Garden Quarter area of Chester and touching them inappropriately before running off.

And as local residents will know, the Garden Lane area is a popular area for students attending the University of Chester. And as new students arrive in the city, Cheshire Police are urging students to download the Hollie Guard app. It is an app that turns their smartphone into an advanced personal safety device.

The Hollie Guard App was developed by the Hollie Gazzard Trust, which was set up by the parents and sister of Hollie Gazzard who was murdered by an ex-partner in 2014 at her place of work in Gloucester. The app was created in her memory to provide a tool for personal safety.

Here are some of the key features and functionalities of the Hollie Guard app:

Guardian Mode: Users can activate this mode when they feel unsafe or in a potentially dangerous situation. Once activated, the app uses the phone’s GPS to track the user’s location and sends alerts to pre-selected emergency contacts. It also records audio and video, which can be crucial evidence in case of an incident.
Shake or Tap Activation: Hollie Guard allows users to activate an alert by shaking or tapping their phone. This can be done discreetly to avoid drawing attention to the fact that they are calling for help.
In-App Chat: Users can send text messages to their emergency contacts through the app, providing real-time updates on their situation.
“I’m Safe” Functionality: After a period of inactivity, the app prompts users to confirm that they are safe. If they don’t respond, the app sends alerts to their emergency contacts.
