Fly Tipping Nightmare
I know this isn’t only restricted to Hoole where we live. It is a problem throughout the area. But as we do live in Hoole, I’ll use Hoole as an example. The fly tipping nightmare by where we live is something that is getting worse.
There is the realisation that we are living in strange circumstances nowadays. That point is well understood. But to be clear, this fly tipping nightmare has been going on for a lot longer than just Covid-19 times.
Not only that, we have had promises made during Covid times that the cleaning of the alleyway will be a ‘priority next week’ type of instruction. Until today there hadn’t been any clean up for months and months. That’s not me having a dig by the way. It’s a statement of fact.
This paragraph now is an extra addition to my original post as lo and behold the alley has now been cleared this afternoon!!! Yay!!!! I have changed the sentence in the paragraph above to read “Until today” instead of “As of today.” Now let’s continue from here and make such fly tipping a thing of the past.
Anyway, let’s have a look at what’s been happening………..
Fly Tipping Nightmare
The photo above is the tip of the iceberg. There’s even more rubbish further down the alleyway and behind where I took the photo.
I took this fly tipping nightmare photo last week. It got worse since then. In fact, on Monday we had the return of the piles of meat left over a grid in the alleyway. Some delightful person has subjected us to the pleasures of raw, partly cooked and cooked piles of what looks like chicken pieces on about 4 or 5 occasions. It is disgusting. It stinks and there are flies everywhere whenever there is a dump.
To give you an idea of what I am talking about, have a look at the pile of meat photo below.
You will see the ‘fresh’ stuff to the left of the grid. While over the right hand side of the grid is the dried up remains of the last dump a few weeks ago. The Council have been made aware of these dumps on various occasions. And been contacted generally about the state of the alleyways and not just these specific meat incidents.
Thankfully today they have been and done something. They have cleared the rubbish. Not sure if the alley has been cleansed though. A lot of horrible stuff (like liquidy niceties) were also evident. Like that grunge next to the chicken in the video and the photo. But, for now, it is a big step forward to see the alleyway cleared. So, a big thanks to CWAC for finally getting here.
Now, how do we keep this up? Do we set up a neighbourhood “ChickenGate Watch” type of thing? For want of a better description.
Here’s a short video of “ChickenGate” by the way…….
NB: As mentioned above, since writing this post, the alleyway has finally been cleared. Maybe after the exchange of emails this morning? So, while watching the video above made on Monday it now needs to be made known that the Council have now done something about it. So the narrative in the video is out of date.
The latest exchange of communication with CWAC was earlier today. It is great that the original message this morning of it will be cleared “within a fortnight” was reviewed and a team sent today. Maybe sending the photo of “ChickenGate” helped?
However, as it is becoming more and more serious I have asked for the contact details of the head of the relevant Directorate. Because we have been in this position before and now the situation has gone beyond merely reporting a latest spate of fly tipping.
This request is so that we can all see how we can do things for the better. It is not a Council witchhunt. (NB: Although it may have been if they had left it for a fortnight instead of coming today!!). Things are hard enough for Councils. So, how do the collective “we” try to ensure we don’t face more “ChickenGate” situations?
Fly Tipping Nightmare – A Request
So, now that the alleyway has been cleared for now, let’s strike while the iron is hot. How do we keep it ‘dump free.’ It may not be of much significance but let’s start with a straightforward request.
As a short term solution to the ongoing fly tipping nightmare, a reasonable request if I may. Can all those people dumping rubbish please stop. Whether that be in Hoole, city centre, Blacon or wherever. Please stop.
Furthermore, if the “ChickenGate” culprit is reading this, have a look at the photo above and watch the video. For now the video is “Unlisted” on YouTube. I will decide if and when I change it’s status to “Public.”
Please think of people (including children) who may wish to use the alleyway.
Why Should The Fly Tippers Stop?
Why? Where do you start in answering that question. I’ll give you an example of a situation that could happen in any of the households but one that happened in ours on Monday night.
We have four moggies and one of our “Fab Four” brings us a ‘present’ now and then. It could be anything. We’ve had polystyrene tiles, empty crisp packets, pizza menus, leaves and plenty of harmless stuff like that. But, we’ve also had a recent increase in live rodent presents.
On Monday night as it was warm, the back door was open while we sat and watched TV. In the middle of the evening cue Annie’s big entrance, loudly announcing she had brought us something as a gift.
From a distance and in the dim light we thought it was either a rat or a piece of the not at all tempting chicken in the alleyway. It was that size and shape. As Annie got closer we could see it wasn’t any of the above. Plonked by my feet with a triumphant fanfare, Annie presented us with a discarded, really dirty, rammy looking, disposable face mask. Whoopee!!! Thanks Annie!!
No doubt plucked from one of the many ripped bin bags cluttering the alleyway.
Lesser Of Several Evils?
So, was a discarded, rammy, face mask the lesser of several evils? Not sure. It’s bad enough during this pandemic to keep Covid-19 free. Having it potentially brought into the house or some other unspeakable virus or bug makes it even worse.
A case of if Covid won’t get you, some other horrible bug from a rat infested alleyway will.
But, while I’m at it, I’ll repeat my request to the fly tippers everywhere. Please stop dumping your rubbish.
I’m not aware if any children ever get to wander in the alleyway. With the alleyway being as it is though, it is something else for parents to be extra careful about. Any pets? Of course pets are totally different. Especially cats. They could get right into the piles of chicken and either make themselves ill, or bring some of the horrible stuff indoors with them. Or both.
Please help spread the word of this fly tipping nightmare. Let’s see if we can sort this problem out once and for all.
How do you think we can end this fly tipping nightmare?
Stay safe everyone.
