Deli Vert Faulkner Street Hoole
How many times do you walk past a shop door and see a sign in the window and move past without reading it? Sadly, a sign in the window of Deli Vert Faulkner Street Hoole did more than catch the eye. Reading it delivered some unexpected and sad news. As of 29th March, Deli Vert will be closing its doors for good.
Here is that sign.
Deli Vert Faulkner Street Hoole

The message begins with the comment of “unfortunately due to economic circumstances.” This in itself is bad news. Especially for a business that has been trading and a hugely popular part of the Hoole independent trader’s community for many years. People came from far and wide to visit the award winning deli. Seeing the regular hustle and bustle and the queues on a Saturday morning was a regular weekend event.
As locals are aware, Hoole is full of local independent traders. Deli-vert is one of them, ticking so many of the boxes local residents love about shops in the neighbourhood. The quality of their produce was known for miles around – not just in Hoole. If you don’t know what Deli-vert specialised in, it could be summarised as being a multi award-winning deli providing high quality local and specialist foods, including cheese, freshly baked goods, baguettes, hampers and much more. You could also pop in and have a cuppa. Or sit outside and watch the world go by.
Let’s take a closer look at this soon to be sorely missed delicatessen
Deli Vert Delicatessen
For many years, Deli-Vert in Faulkner Street, Hoole was a small family run delicatessen that has been opened to offer tasty, high quality produce and ready to eat foods to take away. Local Cheshire produce featured high on its stock list, as well as ingredients inspired by the owners favourite dishes.
The owners of the award winning deli-vert showed a passion for fine food, a concern for the environment, a belief in the importance of a strong local economy and a desire to promote local alternatives wherever possible. As I said above, they ticked many boxes local residents love about their neighbourhood independent traders.
Regular visitors loved the wide range of local products on offer. Mouth watering products like local cakes, scones, pies, biscuits, sausage rolls, eggs, ham, cheeses, jams, chutneys, apple juices, oats, yogurts, ice cream, artisan breads, pates, ready meals and lots more. All these delicious foods were grown, laid, prepared, pickled, cooked and baked within a few miles of their shops.
It’s a massive shame that the local community is losing such an iconic independent retail outlet. I hope all the staff soon find themselves alternative employment if they haven’t already done so. And I also wish the owners all the very best for the future.
Is This A Sign Of What’s To Come?
The reason offered for Deli-Vert’s closure is financial. This next bit is not necessarily a political statement, or a political moan. It’s a statement of fact whoever the Government be. Bear in mind the closure is before the full impact of the Government’s Autumn Budget reforms kick in with earnest. As from April businesses will have to deal with increases in Employers National Insurance contributions and an increase in the minimum wage hourly rate.
Even before these events happen, the figures aren’t good. According to a recent report, more than 200,000 small to medium businesses folded since July’24 and very low figures (are the lowest for a nine month period?) recorded for new business start ups.
As I say though, this is what has been recorded. It is not a political statement. On a local level, only time will tell if Deli-Vert will be the only financial casualties. As local independent traders are so popular in Hoole, it will be worth keeping a closer eye on this.
