Chester Zoo Bush Dogs
As you will know a day out at our prestigious Chester Zoo is always a day out to enjoy. And as has been regularly mentioned there is certainly something in the air or water down at Chester Zoo. Babies galore from a variety of species. We have had baby elephants, newts, rhinos, painted dogs, otters, a sun bear and an okapi to name just a few. More babies again to report. This time say “hello” to the Chester Zoo bush dogs puppies.
Chester Zoo Bush Dogs
As it happens the biggest litter of bush dogs ever born at Chester Zoo have popped out to say “Hello” to the world. The six pups have been born to proud parents Mana (mother) and Franco (father). Franco, what a cool name!!
Zoo experts believe that the litter – two boys and four girls – arrived on 13th May. They remained hidden away for the first few weeks of their lives and it is now that they have popped out to play and to make themselves more familiar with their new surroundings.
Bush dogs have been a feature at Chester Zoo since first making an appearance in 1992. Originally hailing from the wet savannah and forest areas of Central and South America, bush dogs are most active at dawn and dusk. They can be seen resting in hollow tree trunks and burrows at night.
Our Chester Zoo bush dogs are part of a managed European Zoo Breeding Programme. Their existence status has been described as vulnerable. As ever Chester Zoo are doing their bit to ensure these little cuties will be looking forward to a happy life in their new environment.
Recent Visit
We popped along a few days ago to have a look at some of the new additions. Unfortunately it was too early to see the baby sun bear. It will be a few weeks before we can see this particular new addition apparently. We did get to see the bush dogs though. It was fascinating to see them circling the small pool in their enclosure. It seemed they were patrolling their zone and leaving their scent where necessary.
I didn’t get to video it but one of them went in for a dip in that murky, slimy looking pool. I’ll bet he was minging after that.
It’s always worth being around when it’s feeding time for any of the animals. The same applies to feeding the bush dogs. They made short work of all that was thrown over the fence to them. So fascinating to witness that. You should try and witness it for yourself.
Already looking forward to the next Chester Zoo visit.
