Chester Pennsylvania Connections
The more I delve into my new Chester International category, the more fascinating it becomes. In previous Chester International posts, I’ve talked about Chester Pennsylvania by way of a quick introduction and talking about it’s culture, sport and entertainment. Continuing my intrigue with Chester Pennsylvania and how it compares with our Chester, I thought I’d have a look at Education in Chester Pennsylvania in a post to follow this one. But before I get into the nitty gritty of that, a quick mention of the original connections between the two historic cities. Thinking about it, I should have started with this as an opening post on the topic. But, it’s mentioned here anyway. So, before getting stuck into education in Chester Pennsylvania, time for a quick history lesson. Here’s some brief information about Chester Pennsylvania connections. Long may the connections continue.
Chester Pennsylvania Connections
The city of Chester, Pennsylvania, does have connections to Chester, England, although they are not what you may consider to be direct roots. Chester, Pennsylvania, was founded by English Quaker William Penn in 1682. For the record, William Penn was an English Quaker who was granted the land by King Charles II of England. William Penn named the settlement “Chester” in honour of our city of Chester. Maybe it was a way to pay homage to the city’s English heritage and to establish a connection to the homeland of many of its early settlers. Sounds reasonable to me.
William Penn An English Quaker
While William Penn’s direct connections to Chester, England, may not be extensively documented, or obviously direct. For instance, William Penn wasn’t born in Chester. However, it’s important to note that our beautiful city of Chester played a significant role in English history and was a prominent city during the time of William Penn’s life. Furthermore, as an Englishman born into a prominent family and educated in England, William Penn would have been familiar with cities like Chester and their cultural and historical significance.
In addition, Chester’s importance as a centre of trade and commerce in medieval England may have influenced William Penn’s understanding of urban planning and governance. Fundamental and important concepts that he later implemented in the founding of Pennsylvania. Maybe not the steep history of a Roman influence, but an historic city nevertheless. Anyone reading my last few Chester Pennsylvania posts will have noticed that.
Overall, while the specific connections between William Penn and our Chester may not be explicitly documented, it is likely that he was aware of the city and its significance within the broader context of English history and culture.
Chester Pennsylvania Connections – And There’s More
The connections don’t end there. Additionally, both Chester’s share common characteristics such as their location along rivers (Chester, Pennsylvania, along the Delaware River and we of course, along the River Dee). Also, they are both cities of historical significance, and their roles as cultural and economic centres within their respective regions. In other words, both key cities for a variety of similar reasons. Maybe William Penn structured Chester Pennsylvania in such a way to keep the Chester Pennsylvania connections continuing through the ages.
Overall, while there may not be direct roots or connections between Chester, Pennsylvania, and ourselves, the similarities in the names and certain characteristics highlight the enduring legacy of English influence in the founding and development of Chester, Pennsylvania.
All fascinating stuff as far as I’m concerned. Anyway, next up, Education in Chester Pennsylvania. But before then……..
