Right, let’s do this. Proper long distance running shoes? Check. Cool, loose fitting running vest? Check. Good sized, snug but not too tight, running shorts? Check. A new water bottle and energy giving drink formula at the ready? Check. Two working knees and a pain free back to ensure I get around the course without any hassle? Ah…..I might need to take a rain check there. Well, in all truth, knees have gone; my back’s gone…..along with other bits falling off. So, in reality the Chester Marathon this Sunday is a “no, no” for me. That being the case, cancel the press, cancel the photographers, cancel the Guinness Book of Records rep. Deep sigh…..I ain’t running the Chester Marathon. But there will be plenty who are.

Chester Marathon This Sunday

In all honesty, there’s no chance whatsoever of me even contemplating such an event. Even if I threw in my angina spray into the checklist above – not a chance. But that doesn’t stop me spreading the word does it. On that note and without any further ado, let’s give a bit more information on the Chester Marathon this Sunday. “This Sunday” being, 8th October.

The Chester Marathon, often referred to as the MBNA Chester Marathon due to its sponsorship, is a highly regarded long-distance road race, normally held annually here in our beautiful city. The marathon is known for its picturesque route that showcases the historic and scenic beauty of the city and its surroundings. Sort of, enjoy the view while you run flat out. Or, walk flat out. It all depends on your fitness levels of course.

Key Details of the Chester Marathon Include:

Distance: The Chester Marathon is a full marathon, covering a distance of 26.2 miles (42.195 kilometers). It is a challenging race that attracts both seasoned marathoners and first-time participants. And, of course, those taking part for a bit of fun.
Route: The marathon course takes runners on a captivating journey through the charming and historic city of Chester. Participants start in the city center and traverse a carefully planned route that incorporates a mix of urban streets, scenic countryside roads, and picturesque villages. Notably, the course passes iconic landmarks like Chester Cathedral, the ancient city walls, and the scenic River Dee. Runners also enjoy the serene countryside landscapes of Cheshire and North Wales as they complete the course.
Atmosphere: The Chester Marathon is renowned for its friendly and supportive atmosphere. Spectators line the route, cheering on the runners, and creating an uplifting ambiance throughout the race.
Organization: The event is well-organized, with aid stations providing hydration and support along the way. Medical personnel are also available to ensure the safety of participants.

In summary, the Chester Marathon is a prestigious and scenic marathon held in the historic city of Chester, UK. Its appealing route, rich in history and natural beauty, draws runners from around the world to participate in this challenging race.

It all begins at 9:00am from the Roodee Racecourse and it finishes up, some 26.2 miles later, at Castle Drive.

The Route

Runners, joggers for that matter, or even walkers, will leave the racecourse and head into the City centre. Through the centre they will pass the Town Hall, the Cathedral, the split level “Rows,” Eastgate Clock, Amphitheatre and through the Roman Walls before heading out of the City across the Old Dee Bridge.

The route then leads out of Chester past the Duke of Westminster’s estate. From there the route goes through Pulford, before crossing the border into Wales and the villages of Lavister and Rossett. I understand that 19 miles of the route is in England an 7 miles in Wales.

Keeping to the rural lanes, runners will complete a small loop before entering the historic village of Holt. And a lovely village it is too. Then, from Holt, they will cross the ancient Roman bridge at Farndon to return to England and the home stretch running through Churton, Aldford and Huntington.

On re-entering the City, runners pass the River Dee along the Groves and Castle Drive before a victorious (every runner will be victorious irrespective of where they finish in the pecking order) finish on Castle Drive!
