Chester Christmas Lights Switch On
This Thursday, 16th November, sees the annual Chester Christmas lights switch on. As with previous year’s the switch on promises to be a popular and spectacular occasion.
The full programme for this year’s Christmas lights switch on and festive parade has been organised by Chester’s Business Improvement District, CH1 ChesterBID, in partnership with Cheshire West and Chester Council.
This year’s themed parade will be the ever popular ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’
Santa (yes, the real one!!) will be ably assisted by four elves as the parade hits the streets. So kids, be on your best behaviour and be nice to Santa and his helpers. And don’t forget to put your ‘smiley’ face on. Throughout the parade the elves will be posing for selfies. You should also be aware there is a competition for the best selfie. The competition is open throughout the festive period with prizes for the best entrants.

Of course Christmas isn’t Christmas without a bit of the old musical, festive cheer. On that note (no pun intended!!), you will love to know that Chester’s much-loved brass band will lead the parade, aptly performing a selection of Christmas classics.
As well as the Christmas lights switch on, Thursday also sees the opening of the Christmas Market. This year it will open at 11am and run from 16th November to 20th December. Hours of opening are from 10am to 6pm, Sunday to Wednesday. In addition, the other three nights, Thursday, Friday and Saturday provide late night shopping. Thursdays the market is open until 8pm, while on Friday and Saturday, the stalls close at 7pm.
Worth Noting
Yes, the Christmas Market is worth a visit. Although, from a personal point of view, I hope there aren’t as many food stalls as in previous years. But, just as importantly, if not more so, don’t forget the Market in The Forum. These guys provide a great service and quality products all the year round. So, remember they are also here at Christmas and deserve a visit.
As do all the other local businesses. My favourite local business to visit at this time of year is The Shropshire. Great beer and a great atmosphere for you to enjoy. Good to see Dixie Dean’s old pub, The Dublin Packet reopened as well. The Town Hall isn’t the same without The Packet. And don’t get me started on Blackstock’s chippy next door to The Dublin Packet. Chips cooked in pine oil are an absolute knockout. Are these the best chips in town?
CheStar
One of the highlights of Christmas for me last year was seeing the array of Christmas trees populating the corridors of Chester Cathedral. Schools from all around the area contributed to the festive spectacle.
Also, the reappearance of the festive ‘CheSTAR’ will be a popular attraction. Last year saw CheStar make its debut outside the Cathedral. A giant, 25ft tall, sparkling Christmas star, situated on St Werburgh Street made up of almost 19,000 twinkling lights.
Fireworks
Fireworks will be let off during the parade at The Cathedral, Eastgate Clock, The Cross, Amphitheatre and Town Hall. A very important thing for you to be aware of. Do not forget your pets!!!
Make sure they are safe. Here’s a short video with a few safety tips….
