Cheshire Neighbourhood Watch Association
I received a message from regular website visitor and contributor, John (thanks John) from Blacon about the Cheshire Neighbourhood Watch Association. It seems that Cheshire Neighbourhood Watch Association (CNWA) are looking for volunteers. More specifically they are looking for individuals to help run Neighbourhood Watch in Cheshire. So, is this something of interest to you? Could You Help Run Neighbourhood Watch In Cheshire?
Let’s try and provide a bit more meat on the bones so to speak.
Cheshire Neighbourhood Watch Association
What is Neighbourhood Watch and how did it all begin? Well, a bit of history first.
Way back in 1964, 28-year-old Kitty Genovese from New York, was fatally stabbed in New York outside an apartment building across the street from where she lived. Two weeks after the murder it was suggested that 38 witnesses saw or heard the attack. However, none of them came to her aid or tried to call the police. This triggered enquiries into what became known as the bystander effect or “Genovese syndrome.”
The very sad murder case became a fundamental part of American psychology textbooks for the next four decades. It also motivated a community response and the very first Neighbourhood Watch scheme was set up.
Here In The UK
Here in the UK, in 1982 the first very first Neighbourhood Watch scheme, then referred to as Home Watch, was set up right on our very own doorstep. The very first one was set up in Mollington, Cheshire. From there Neighbourhood Watch has grown from strength to strength. To such an extent that Neighbourhood Watch representatives formed local, county and regional groups.
More recently, in 2007, with the support of the police and the Home Office, the first national umbrella organisation (Neighbourhood and Home Watch) for the movement was established. The focus has been on building local Neighbourhood Watch community groups which liaise with the police and focus on reducing burglary and other home and personal crimes.
The Ever Changing Face Of Crime
Today we live in so very unpredictable and ever-changing times. And, of course, crime has consequently evolved. With the transformation of how people use the internet, communities are no longer restricted to geographical locations. As a result, crime has taken on new forms. And in some ways, some of the scams etc, are now so very sophisticated. To this end we need to so very alert and we need to be so much more responsive where we can.
Visitors to this Chester Lifestyle website will know we try to “do our bit” in the fight against crime. As already mentioned, so many of the updates, warnings and alerts have been provided by my pal, John. And for that, we should all be so very grateful. You can see all of the alerts etc in the Chester Crimewatch category HERE.
To ensure Neighbourhood Watch remains relevant when the pace of change is faster than at any time in our past, our focus now is on building resilient communities to tackle crime in all its shapes and forms and keep people safe across England and Wales.
