Bear Born At Chester Zoo

Chester Zoo hasn’t stayed out of the news for long has it? In my last post I asked the question I wonder what they are feeding them at Chester Zoo. Baby after baby after baby. It’s as though there’s a conveyor belt of them waiting in the wings. On this occasion it has been announced there has been a bear born at Chester Zoo. Great news. Not just any bear though (is there such a thing as ‘any bear’?).

The bear born at Chester Zoo is in fact a rare Sun bear cub. As with so many animals, Sun bears are a highly threatened species. Normally found in South East Asia, Sun bears are the smallest bears in the world. Chester Zoo keepers estimated that our new arrival weighed only 400 grams or so at birth. That is small. Tiny in fact.

Our new Sun bear cub is even more remarkable when you consider his parents background. They were rescued from poachers in Cambodia as it happens. Proud mother and father, Milli and Toni were taken from their natural wild habitat by illegal wildlife traders. These illegal traders cruelly killed their mothers and kept them as badly treated pets.

Fortunately, they were rescued. When they were found they were in a poor state of health though. However, they were nursed back to health by conservationists working for the Free The Bears Organisation in Cambodia. Now on the mend, they were carefully moved to the UK. Eventually, they arrived at Chester Zoo where they completed their remarkable recovery.

Now happily enjoying life in their new habitat at Chester Zoo they have now produced their first cub. Congratulations to Milli and Toni.

A momentous occasion for both parents and Chester Zoo themselves. It so happens that this birth is the first UK breeding of this species. So, a big “congratulations” to Chester Zoo as well.

Another trip to Chester Zoo is no doubt on the cards very soon.
