Baby Otters
There doesn’t seem to be a week that goes by without news of more babies being born at Chester Zoo. Just over ten weeks ago baby otters were born at the Zoo. On this occasion, parents Annie and Wallace, provided the Zoo with the opportunity to announce the birth of five baby otters. The cute quintet of pubs are all doing well and are said to be in “tip top condition”. Vets and zoo keepers checked over the newbies by weighing them, listening to their heartbeats and giving them a good old thorough physical examination. And of course, they were able to determine their sexes. Four girls and one boy therefore are the latest Chester Zoo babies.
Baby Otters
These otters are Asian short clawed otters. They are in fact the world’s smallest species of otters. Conservationists list Asian short clawed otters as being vulnerable to extinction. As a result they face increasing threats in order to survive in the wild.
Two of the reasons given for their vulnerability are, unsurprisingly, human related. Firstly, many areas of their normal wetland habitat are being taken over by human populations. In addition, some are also hunted for use in traditional Chinese medicines.

Other Chester Zoo Babies
The new baby otters are just one of several species babies born this year. In January we saw the addition of seven endangered African Painted Dogs pups.
In February saw the birth of one of the world’s rarest deers. Cuteness personified!!!
Also in February, a rare giant anteater was welcomed to Chester Zoo as part of an endangered species breeding programme.
Most recently, in April in fact, a clutch of rare baby ‘forest dragons’ emerged from eggs. These births are particularly fascinating in that it will help to uncover more about one of the world’s least understood reptiles.

If you didn’t know already I am a huge fan of Chester Zoo. There is so much to see. This will continue of course as more and more babies are born. In addition to that of course is the ever changing development of Chester Zoo generally. We go regularly and we can say that no one visit is like any other.
Going off on a bit of a tangent I’m tinkering with making a variety of short promo type videos. One in the pipeline is a Chester Zoo one. Keep and eye out for this one.
