Baby Bornean Orangutan

For a few months now it seems that we have been mentioning a fair bit of disappointing news relating to Chester Zoo regarding financial issues. Obviously with the pandemic and the subsequent lockdown, income streams have been badly affected. And then of course, the Government have not exactly been playing ball with funding assistance either. All in all a pretty gloomy picture being painted recently. But despite all this, you can’t stop good old Mother Nature spreading good news now and then can you. Some great news on that front. A baby Bornean Orangutan has arrived into the world at Chester Zoo.

The birth of the baby Bornean Orangutan came as a bit of a shock to everyone. Mother, Leia’s, pregnancy tests all came back negative. This is one incredible birth for that reason alone.

Chester Zoo keeper Chris Yarwood announced that the “wonderful” arrival had come after multiple tests on its mother Leia failed to spot the pregnancy.

He also stated that although the baby was born in June, Leia had kept her little ‘un mostly hidden from keepers since its arrival. Consequently, keepers were still unsure of the sex of the new baby.

Like so many babies born at Chester Zoo, Bornean orangutans are critically endangered in the wild. So, yet again, Chester Zoo has come up trumps in the now increasingly more difficult quest to save as many endangered species as they can.

As it happens, it is estimated there are only about 55,000 left on the Asian island.

It is great news. During these troubled times, it is comforting to write about some good news. And at the moment Chester Zoo needs it. Let’s hope it is start of a period of even more good news. Are you listening Boris? And I don’t mean Boris the Chimpanzee!!!
