Another New Baby At Chester Zoo
Exactly what are they feeding them on at Chester Zoo nowadays? A week doesn’t seem to go without us reporting or witnessing the wonders of another new baby at Chester Zoo. As you are aware (or if you’re not, see the links below), there have been several births in recent weeks. Meerkats, otters, an elephant and a rhino to name just a few. This time the new baby at Chester Zoo is an Okapi.
Another New Baby At Chester Zoo
Conservationists at Chester Zoo are again celebrating. This time it is for the birth of a rare Okapi!
You may not think it but, despite its zebra-like stripes on its back legs and hindquarters, the Okapi is actually the closest and only living relative to the giraffe!
Incredibly its acute sense of hearing, camouflage and secretive nature helped to it being unknown to science until as recently as 1901. That’s quite remarkable really.
The Okapi’s normal habitat is the rainforests of the Democratic republic of Congo (DRC). Even though the Okapi is a national symbol and protected by Congolese law, they are struggling for survival.
In an attempt to improve their numbers, what better place to be than Chester Zoo.
There are only 68 Okapis in zoos in the whole of Europe. To have the latest addition to their numbers born at Chester Zoo is brilliant.
Okapis In The Wild
As with many other species, Okapis are threatened again by hunting and more and more destruction of their living environment.
It is not clear how many Okapi are still to be found in the wild. Maybe their shyness means the numbers are harder to ascertain. However, zoo experts from around the world are playing a vital role in surveying the species in an attempt to discover more about these shy cuties.
Chester Zoo support their partners – the Okapi Conservation Project and the Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature. As with so many endangered animal species, Chester Zoo are seen to be at the forefront of conservation activities.
Well done to Chester Zoo. And well done to mother and father (K’tusha and Stomp). And more importantly, welcome to the world and to your new home at Chester Zoo, baby Semuliki.
What are the odds on me posting yet another new baby at Chester Zoo post again very soon.
Whatever it is they are feeding them at Chester Zoo – long may it continue!!
