Ermine Road Railway Bridge
I must admit I’m not into railway bridges normally, but the Ermine Road railway bridge deserves a bit of a mention. Well, a lot of a mention actually. For years cars and pedestrians alike have walked by and passed under the bridge without any thought probably. And why would anyone give it any thought? After all, a railway bridge is a railway bridge isn’t it. Or is it? Those that have walked passed or driven under Ermine Road railway bridge recently would say differently. Here’s one of the reasons why.
Ermine Road Railway Bridge

OK, I know what you’re thinking. That’s not a railway bridge. And you would be correct. But what if I told you this was part of a project alongside Ermine Road railway bridge that has been created and developed by a local resident in his own spare time. The image above shows that it is still a work in progress, but nevertheless, it’s pretty impressive. The local resident has not only built this seating area but has also cleared up all around it. He has spent hour after hour chopping, cutting, digging and planting. Yes, even planting. As well as creating the seating area in the alley just off Ermine Road right underneath the railway tracks, he has got rid of all the undergrowth and planted a variety of flowers and plants in flower beds right inside the archways of the bridge.
As I say, all in his own time. He says it is still some way off where he would like it to be, but what he’s done so far is very impressive. Many people now walking under Ermine Road railway bridge stop and have a good look. Before too long some may even bring a flask and a sandwich and stop a bit longer.
Good Neighbours Can Be Hard To Find
Indeed, good neighbours can be hard to find. But when you do find them, they can be worth their weight in gold. A case in point with our neighbour who has selflessly given up a lot of his time to give something of value and enjoyment to the community. If I was wearing a hat I would take it off to him right now. Credit where credit is due.
We are well lucky with another community spirited neighbour just a few doors away from the bridge man. Most, if not all of us, have witnessed the nightmare of potholes in the road. We certainly have. One particularly bad one right outside our house. Yes the Council have said that they will fix the potholes but while we all patiently wait, they get worse. And worse…..and worse…..and worse. In recent weeks though ours has disappeared. Or been filled in to be more precise.
Well done Cheshire West and Chester Council. Er, not quite. They didn’t fill it in. It was fixed by another community spirited neighbour. The pothole was getting that bad you could almost see Sydney Opera House. And it was dangerous. Very dangerous. A neighbour though went out of their way, bought the necessary materials and fixed it. Job done. Not only that, they took it upon themselves to cut back a lot of bushes and undergrowth obscuring the street sign so that we could all see a reminder of where we are living again.
As I say, when you have neighbours like we have in these two, they are worth their weight in gold. I hope they are suitably recognised and rewarded by the powers that be. I won’t hold my breath.
