The Heart Of Africa Comes To Chester
Is there anyone living in Chester that hasn’t heard of the latest, amazing feature of our world famous Chester Zoo? I’m sure most have, but just in case you haven’t, get yourself down to Chester Zoo as soon as you can. The Heart of Africa comes to Chester. Last Saturday, 5th April, saw the opening of this 22 acre incredible addition to the UK’s largest and best Zoo. During the preceding week the attraction was open to members first, who popped along in their thousands from the Monday through to the Friday. But what exactly is the Heart of Africa and what does it represent for Chester Zoo, and more importantly the endangered species now roaming around in their wonderful new home? Read on for more information.
The Heart Of Africa Comes To Chester

I think the first thing that needs to be said is that you really need to experience Heart of Africa for yourself. Yes you can read various articles and watch videos, but really speaking, as good as these media snippets are, they don’t portray the full, spectacular story. We went on the Monday of the members week and I must say, the weather was fantastic. And that would have been a bonus for so many. The Zoo included. The weather made an additional positive impact.
As soon as we entered the first enclosure saw the welcome reappearance of the meerkats. Cute little rascals aren’t they. You can even sort of enter their new habitat by entering a tunnel that leads to dome shaped viewing locations actually within the enclosure. This was very popular, especially with the young ‘uns.
Onwards from there the whole area and experience, opens out into a quite spectacular environment. The animal sounds being piped through added to the atmosphere. No doubt in time there will be plenty of noise being belted out by the new regulars. I understand that there are going to be somewhere in the region of 56 different types of species residing in the Heart of Africa.
There’s not only the residents to enjoy. If you fancied a nibble, you can grab a bite at Pamoja Village. Plenty of seated areas as well to have a sit down and relax. I could go on, but suffice it to say, Heart of Africa’s aim of giving visitors a closer connection to the sights and sounds of Africa’s diverse wildlife is very impressive to say the least. As I said above, the best way to judge it, is to pay a visit yourself. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.
