Popular Lost Pubs
There was an article in the local Chester Standard recently discussing popular lost pubs in Chester. You can see the Chester Standard article in this link HERE. The article not only reminded me of the popular lost pubs themselves, but also reminded me of a couple of articles I wrote on the subject a couple of years ago.
My first article was called Pubs In Chester City Centre No Longer With Us and the second was entitled Old Pubs In Chester City Centre. Some cracking pubs mentioned in the Chester Standard article and my own posts. And some great memories as well of course.
Popular Lost Pubs
My own articles were a recollection of the pubs I recall. Back in the day I wobbled out of many of them. As you will see in my posts there is mention of some wine bars as well. In essence of course recollections of popular lost pubs is a generational journey. Even though there are a lot more mentioned in my articles, these only scratch the surface of those mentioned on this excellent Chester information website, Chester Walls. Now that is what you call a definitive list of popular lost pubs.
From my own original recollections, I have since recalled another I used to partake of a cheeky one or two now and then. And that’s the Snooty Fox in St Johns Street, underneath the Blossoms Hotel. It was what is now called Red Door.
Others now also recalled are the Waterloo and the very recently closed, Spital. Both of those were in Boughton. Another recently closed pub is Henry Potts. A pub I know better as the Fat Cat in the lower part of Watergate Street. And of course, a bit further down was Watergates pub itself, right by the racecourse. A belting pub for many years.
Did I mention The Plumbers in Newgate Street? I can’t remember now. It is to be reopened soon I believe. Not as The Pumbers but something else. A cracking pub “back in the day” though. And did I mention The Railway at the bottom of Brook Street and The George across the (dual carriageway) road. Talking of George’s, let’s not forget the George and Dragon on Liverpool Road.
Popular Lost Pubs And So Many Memories
I’m sure I could rattle off a few more if I wobble my head a bit more. But suffice to say, taking a look at all the links provided above will bring back so many memories for so many. As I said in one of my articles, Chester Walls mention of the old pubs in Northgate Street alone is fascinating. You really must visit their website. As I mentioned, my articles were about my own personal recollections. Some great memories.
The Chester Standard article mentioned Brannigans night club. This mention also reminded me of a previous post I wrote – Dancing Around Handbags In The Good Old Days. Ah, the joys of tripping over a handbag to get onto the dance floor for the last half hour “slowies.”
On that note, I’ll leave it there. Good days to remember and cherish.
