Chester Races 2024

A quick post to remind you in case you didn’t know, Chester Races 2024 begins tomorrow, 8th May. Chester Race meetings are very popular events each and every year. This meeting in May is, as far as I am aware, the main meeting. Three days of racing enjoyment for race fans from all over the country. And I am sure, this year won’t be any different. Many racegoers will no doubt enjoy a cheeky couple of drinks as well as the odd flutter. And why not. But drink and gamble sensibly though.

Mind you, although a very popular time of the year, locally the Races are not to everyone’s liking.

But, a fan or not, it all kicks off tomorrow. So, what can you expect for the forthcoming race season?

As far as I’m concerned, I’m not a Races fan. Never have been, but I can see the attraction for others. I’ve only ever been once, probably in the mid to late eighties. I was the only one on a stag party of about 15 or so race fans at a Friday night meeting. To be honest, the night passed me by. I didn’t quite get the jargon either. That became clear to me when I was asked “what I was on in the next race?” My answer of, “good shout, I’ll have a pint of bitter please” wasn’t the expected response. Not the best stag night I’ve been on. But never mind.

Still, to my credit, I could tell the difference between the front end of the horse and the back end. But that was about the extent of my knowledge.

Chester Races Is Big Business

The other thing to consider of course is that Chester Races means big business. Not just for the Chester Race company themselves, but for the many hospitality businesses throughout the city. Where Chester Races is different to many, if not all, racecourses throughout the country, is that the course is a very short walk distance to the city centre.

Consequently, a great opportunity for the bars, restaurants, coffee shops, hotels etc. And all other businesses presumably as a result of the increased footfall. Make hay while the sun shines so to speak. Hopefully racegoers will drink and act sensibly.

I must admit, I don’t see how, for example, if Chester FC were to play a big rival in front of say 4,000 fans, all the pubs would be closed before and after the game. But then, a race meeting of some 25,000 attendees, many of whom are also football fans, not only sees the pubs stay open, but there are a wide range of alcohol related special offers to choose from.

Part of the balancing act of course is the economic benefits brought to the city. If everywhere is well policed and everyone behaves sensibly, then not a problem. Let’s hope then that this year is totally different to most, if not all, of the others.
