John Haygarth Chester Infirmary
It’s amazing to think that Chester Royal Infirmary was open for such a long time. As it says above it was founded in 1755 and moved to St Martin’s Way in 1761. It remained open until 1996. It was in fact closed in stages. The inpatient work was transferred to Chester’s modern day hospital, the Countess of Chester in 1993, with the outpatients department transferred in 1996 – when the Infirmary closed for good.
I’m old enough to remember it well. I wouldn’t go so far to say I had fond memories, but I do remember it.
The Haygarth Building therefore is a fitting tribute to John Haygarth. So, if ever you are heading into the Haygarth, you’ll be able to relate to some of the origins and the history. And if you see someone limping along towards you, remember, walk on the left!!
