August Bank Holiday 2023
I don’t know about you but whenever the August Bank Holiday approaches, I start to think, where has this year gone. To some it begins the countdown to Christmas. Maybe this is because it is the last Bank Holiday in the year? I wonder if there would have been an extra one thrown in if the Lionesses had won the World Cup by the way? On that note, unlucky Lionesses. You still did the nation proud. Let’s hope the disappointment is used as a springboard to future success. Anyway, it wasn’t to be.
So back onto this August Bank Holiday 2023 and to give a quick mention of some of the things you can look forward to in Chester. Before I continue, let me clarify that this article is relevant to locals and anyone from outside the area, still looking for a Staycation venue this weekend.
As we know in Chester, we live in the ideal Staycation location. Not convinced? Then have a quick read of this HERE. This link is well worth a look at if you are contemplating visiting, as in the article there is a list of hotels and guest houses with phone numbers that may be of use.
But while here, tourists and locals alike, what can we look forward to?
August Bank Holiday 2023
The short answer with Chester and as ever – there is plenty to do. I may not cover everything and everywhere in this article, but events mentioned are well worth checking out.
Let’s begin with one of my, and many others, favourites, Chester Zoo. You can, for instance, visit and be amazed with the spectacular Planet Shark. A place where you can be transported under the sea into the domain of one of the world’s most misunderstood predators. Learn about the anatomy, biology and hunting strategies of the ocean’s most effective predators.
Or why not try the Zoo’s brand new 360° visual experience, Shark Dive. This enables you to go on an incredible virtual adventure to Tiger Beach. Where you can experience stunning coral reefs full of rich marine life, including majestic Tiger sharks.
Apart from these two mentioned, there is always plenty going on at Chester Zoo. You can just turn up and ‘play it by ear’ so to speak and make your own leisurely way around the Zoo. If you do, you must visit Inka, the Zoo’s new Jaguar resident.
It is probably best to book your entrance tickets in advance. You can do this HERE.
August Bank Holiday 2023 – What Else?
Another favourite location of mine in Chester is The Groves alongside the River Dee. Pay a visit to The Groves and just relax or watch the world go by. Enjoy a bite to eat, have a couple of cheeky sherbets, or wrap your mouth around an ice-cream.
However, in addition to a relaxing trip down to The Groves, you may fancy a bit of a party? That being the case……Mamma Mia, how can I not mention this event on Saturday, 26th August. It is of course a Mamma Mia Party Cruise. A night where you can join onboard and boogie the night away. For more details of this (70s themed dress optional) extravaganza, have a look HERE.
If you do pop along to The Groves for a chill or a nibble, then you must take a stroll through Grosvenor Park. Enjoy the peace and quiet and watch the world go by. Or, you may fancy a bit of culture? If so, then why not check out these presentations:

Chester Cathedral
Any visit to Chester must include paying a visit to the historic and iconic Chester Cathedral. Not limited to August Bank Holiday only, but well worth a visit on this weekend is a visit to check out the The Mysteries of Chester. This spectacular exhibition enables you to step back in time to learn about Chester’s law-defying Mystery Plays in the place they were born.
You can find out more, including details of opening times, HERE.
Also at The Cathedral you can find Making Tracks 3. Don’t miss your last chance to join Pete Waterman OBE and his Railnuts team in this third and final instalment of Making Tracks. The event runs from 26 July to 2 September, so you can still pop in over the August Bank Holiday weekend. To find out more, have a look HERE.
Again at Chester Cathedral, if you fancy a movie night, then make note of Moonlight Flicks at Dean’s Fields. An open air cinema in the spectacular setting of Chester Cathedral’s Dean’s Field. For this weekend, the movies on offer are:
Aug 26 – Matilda The Musical – Movie starts at 8:20pm
Aug 27 – Elvis (12A) – Movie starts at 8:20pm.
You may fancy a pizza while watching the film? If so, you can pre-order one when you book your movie tickets.
Further details of the movies night and how to book your tickets and order your pizza, then have a look HERE.
A Bit Of History For The Youngsters
Locals will already know and I’m sure many visitors will also be aware, Chester is steeped in Roman history. So, listen up budding Roman soldiers, the Roman Legion needs you! Why not come and join the Roman Army and learn what it was like living as a soldier in the Roman city of Deva almost 2000 years ago.
Come and march through the streets of Chester and visit the old Bath house and Ampitheatre. You can learn how Romans kept themselves clean and how they entertained themselves watching Gladiators go into battle keenly seeking victory.
Check out this link HERE for more details.
Not necessarily for the youngsters only but if history is your interest, then Chester Museum is the place for you. Find out what’s happening at Chester Museum HERE.
August Bank Holiday – What’s On At The Storyhouse
No surprises, but there are plenty of Storyhouse events going on this August Bank Holiday. Rather than list them all in the body of this post, it may well be better to have a look at their calendar. Click this link HERE and select the dates below:
Chester Football Club
As it happens Chester FC are away to Scarborough this Saturday, the 26th. But they are at home on Bank Holiday Monday when they entertain Farsley Celtic – a 3pm kick-off. So, if you fancy a bit of fresh air and a footie match, then why not go along.
While on the subject of sport, no Chester RUFC match this weekend. Their season starts with a home match on 2nd September against Exeter – fixture details HERE. Yes, that is the very same Exeter in Devon. I’m not sure how they’ve worked out the logic of the league structure this season. But all that travelling and the cost!! Anyway, I digress.
August Bank Holiday and Just Chilling
Some, all, or none of the events mentioned above may be of interest. If none, a trip into Chester to just chill is well recommended anyway. A leisurely walk around an historic, beautiful city, a bite to eat, a few drinky-poos. A walk down to The Groves and a visit to Grosvenor Park, a stroll along Chester Walls, a bit of shopping in Chester City Centre and Chester Rows. What’s not to like.
Whatever you decide to do, I hope your August Bank Holiday 2023 is one to remember and enjoy. If you are a visitor, we hope to see you again soon. Don’t forget to tell your friends as well though.
