Good Luck Chester FC
Well, that came round quick didn’t it. The end of last season doesn’t seem that long ago and now here we are, on the brink of a new one already. As you may recall, Chester came so very close last season to taking a step up to the next level in the footballing pyramid. But unfortunately, they were defeated in the Play-Off semi-final by Brackley. However, that was last season. And, we are now on the cusp of a new season. So, let’s start the season with a “Good Luck Chester FC” message. A long season lies ahead in the National League North.
Good Luck Chester FC
Whenever a new season starts, so many clubs seem to make the claim that the league they are in is a difficult league to get out of. For instance, only this morning, I heard mention that 19 of the clubs in the Championship are ex-Premier League clubs. Now, that is a hard league to get out of. It is so competitive. As is the National League North. To the same extent as the Championship? I’m not sure about that. But a difficult league to get out of anyway. Made even harder by the fact there is only one automatic promotion spot. And, harder again by clubs backed heavily financially.
It isn’t just the Premier League that can boast big spending clubs. Why, we only have to look down the road to confirm that. Wrexham were drifting, seemingly going nowhere in particular, for so many years in the Conference/National League but then, rich owners come in, and Wrexham’s newly found spending power – way eclipsing any other club in that league apparently – enables them to gain promotion back into the Football League.
When you see the kind of money being bandied about by Saudi Arabian clubs and the monies that have been present for so many years in the Premier League, it was only a matter of time that some of the wealth filtered to lower down the pyramid. After all there are only a certain number of Premier League clubs available for the super rich to target.
Good Luck Chester FC – First Stop Bishop’s Stortford
Anyway, back onto this new season and our “Good Luck Chester FC” message. They begin the season away to Bishop’s Stortford. I know, I know, some will be thinking, that can’t be right. Bishop’s Stortford is a town in Hertfordshire, so how are they competing in the National League North? They won the Isthmian League Premier Division title in 2022/23, thereby earning promotion to the National League North. It isn’t uncommon to have teams from outside the region they are located in to find themselves in a league predominantly consisting of clubs from the other end of the country. It’s all due to the ups and downs of the non regionalised leagues around them.
A difficult start for Chester then? Who knows? You often find that a newly promoted club still has a certain ‘bounce’ in the early stages of a new season in a higher league. This may be the case with Bishop’s Stortford. Only time will tell.
However, it certainly won’t be easy for Bishop’s Stortford. Chester had a great campaign last season and to many, the foundations are well in place to build on and go even stronger this time round. One thing’s for sure they are in good hands with the current manager in the hot seat. Calum McIntryre has made such an impressive start to his managerial career. He knows the league and the players so well. Not only that, his passion and commitment shines through in every articulate interview he does. It’s incredible to think that he is still only 29.
Yes it will be tough. Chester are just one of several ex-Football League clubs in the National League North. Others like Darlington, Scunthorpe United, Southport, Hereford and Boston will also have high hopes. And, of course, so will the so called lesser known clubs. Some of which have the added benefit of wealthy benefactors.
So, all in all, a good mix of clubs with a variety of attributes and ambitions. All vying for a successful season. That’s always the good thing about a brand new season. At the first game every club and every fan are so enthusiastic. A completely new, level playing field as everyone starts on nil points. Let’s hope that enthusiasm and feelgood factor lasts throughout the season for Calum McIntyre and his players.
To echo the message – Good Luck Chester FC – let’s hope you enjoy you enjoy a successful season.
