This might be interesting. It’s recently been announced that we will be having some major roadworks undertaken in Chester over a 12 month period. Part of these roadworks is to take place is a city centre one way system. Or, to be more specific, a one-way system for the city centre ring road.

And when is this going to happen? Read on for more details.

City Centre One Way System

There’s still a bit of time to get used to the idea fortunately. But not a great deal of time though. The city centre one way system will be commencing on Monday, November 16th and be in place for 12 months.

Have a look at this link HERE for the full details. Here’s a few snippets though to give you an idea of what to expect.

The new one-way system will affect the Nicholas Street and St Martin’s Way dual carriageway section from Grosvenor Roundabout to The Fountains Roundabout. Also affected will be Pepper Street and from The Bars Roundabout to Grosvenor Roundabout. Traffic will still be in two lanes, but in one direction only.

City Centre One Way System – And Why It Is Necessary

This new city centre one way system is necessary because of the ongoing work on the major drainage tunnel upgrade project. You may well have noticed these some roadworks already as preparation work began in July with a number of lane closures on Nicholas Street, around Grosvenor Roundabout and Castle Drive.

More disruption to follow of course. But that will be unavoidable. To help ease the traffic burden motorists are requested to help minimise delays by using the A55 or the M56/A494 around the city as an alternate route wherever possible. Or, alternatively, use the Park and Ride service or public transport.

That last paragraph may well turn out to be another interesting part of the project. Only time will tell whether or not that will work. The A55 at the Wrexham Road roundabout by Chester Business Park at ‘chucking out time’ is a bit lively to say the least at the best of times.

Anyway, a city centre one way system is what we are getting. So, plenty of warning folks. I’ve had a quick read of the link above but can’t see if there are any different arrangements for cyclists. If there isn’t anything different, I’ll be cream crackered if I want to go from say Pepper Street to The Bars!!! Mind you, the exercise will do me good.
