Clean Up Britain Campaign

This article passed to me is of particular interest to us in our local neighbourhood. I’ve already given mention to how our alleyway is massively affected by people just dumping all sorts of rubbish. You can see what was said in my original post on 17th July HERE. Anyway, on to this particular article. “What This Campaign Is About

This campaign has one main objective: to find sustainable and effective solutions to Britain’s epidemic of litter and fly-tipping.

Of course, that’s easy to say, but very difficult to achieve. In reality, changing the behaviour of the 20 million people in Britain who litter is the only answer.

There are hundreds of thousands of community-spirited people who pick up litter. In the short term, this is great, but it’s also a bit like mopping-up while the taps are still running…. the litter will just keep coming again and again, forever. Our campaign is about turning the taps off.

It’s also about trying to force the government to address the numerous and deep systemic failures in both central and local government.

How It Works So Far

Two examples of these failures are: Highways England does an appalling job in cleaning up litter on the motorways.

Their bosses at the Department of Transport don’t set them a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) for cleaning up litter. In other words, Highways England are not judged on whether they clean up litter or not.

Consequently, they do a terrible job, no one in government cares and our motorways continue to look like a dumping ground. For some unknown and senseless reason, the responsibility of ‘looking after’ non-motorway roads is split between County Councils and local (usually District) Councils.

The former is responsible for cutting grass by the side of the road and the latter for litter-picking. So two different organisations do two different jobs at two different times, the result being litter diced into tiny pieces as no-one has removed it before the verges are cut.

No-one takes responsibility. Clean Up Britain will continue to expose these sort of failing and dysfunctional practices.

Clean Up Britain Has Joined Forces

This extract below from the https://cleanupbritain.org/ link provides a bit more specific information as to what is happening. Also, take note of the fines imposed in other parts of the world:

*The first part of the campaign involves urging the government to increase littering fines in the UK to £1000, or 100 hours community litter picking and, also to make it compulsory for every local authority in Britain to enforce the law.*

While critics may argue the increased fine and community service terms are drastic, there is already a £1,000 fine for owners allowing a dog to ‘litter’ in public space, and not clean it up.

In addition, and to compare, there is a $1,000 fine for littering in California; $2,200 Australian dollars in New South Wales and a whopping $10,000 in Massachusetts.

Some interesting information to take note of there. Also, it is good to see that there is someone prepared to really get to grips with this problem.

I mentioned my earlier article above. Just a quick update, all the rubbish in our alleyway is still there by the way. And, not unsurprisingly, it is a lot worse since the article was posted. I’m still in touch with CWAC but still no action as yet. I’ll keep you posted.
