The Big Litter Survey
The title says it all. The Big Litter Survey. I know a lot of people that have views on this subject. And quite strong views as well. It is a subject I have views on myself. I’ll elaborate further down below. But, in the meantime, here’s the information you need on The Big Litter Survey.
Thanks again to John, from Blacon, for the useful and informative information. Many thanks.
The Big Litter Survey
“Has littering got worse? How does it affect you? The Big Litter Survey wants to hear from you. It’s not just unsightly, as discarded rubbish can pose a threat to nature in many ways.
The UK is a beautiful place – stunning rolling countryside, beautiful historic cities, gorgeous beaches and secluded woodlands. But there is still a huge problem plaguing our streets and areas of natural beauty – litter.
During lockdown there was a big increase in litter and fly tipping in all sorts of different locations and even putting nature at risk, according to The Woodland Trust.
Scenes of the aftermath of mass visits to the seaside, with tonnes of rubbish being picked up after careless visitors, shocked many. https://www.inyourarea.co.uk/news/has-littering-got-worse-how-does-it-affect-you/“
The Big Litter Survey – Our Story
I’ve just had a quick check of my phone as I thought I had a photo about this on there. But it’s gone. I must have deleted it. Anyway, not to worry. I’m sure you’ll get the picture, without the picture – if you get what I mean.
Where we live there is an alley at the back of our house. On the other side of the alley is another row of houses.
A few months ago CWAC had a big clean up of the alleyway and delivered a colour brochure to all houses in the neighbourhood. This brochure was a message announcing clean up services and so on and also letting households know that there is a fine system in place for anyone caught dumping rubbish in the alleyway.
That message of a fine threat fell on deaf ears unfortunately. And of course all the great work by CWAC fell by the wayside as well. CWAC have had to return on several occasions since to continue with the clean up process. It really is frustrating.
I like to think I’m not a naive person, so I know that people will go against authority for their own selfish needs on occasions. But when you have had a big clean up, a knock on the door by someone from CWAC to discuss what they have done and what they plan to do, a colour brochure about littering and a threat of a £150 fine then you would think that the message would get through.
Somewhere along the way evidently it didn’t, or to be more precise they have ignored it. What part of the message isn’t clear to them?
The Big Litter Survey – What Do They Dump?
Probably the best way to answer that is to ask what they don’t dump? Old TV’s; PC monitors; computer printers; bits of bicycles; old cupboards; old chest of drawers to name just a few items.
The photo I was hoping to upload was a photo I took some time last week. I took the photo as since the big clean up I have been in contact with CWAC about the state of the alley on a fairly regular basis. Well, I say been in contact. I use the phrase loosely. I email them and they don’t email me back. Even though they asked me to keep them updated. At first they did eventually reply but recently they haven’t responded to my last 3 emails.
Being a generally nice guy and a little cutie (well that’s what my Mum used to tell me!!!), I’ll cut them some slack as this pandemic and the knock on effect has probably meant they are unable to at this moment. Fair do’s. But, that reminds me, a quick message I can send as a useful suggestion. Set up an autoresponder message Mr MyContact’s Department!!!!
This Photo Then
So yes, this photo. What it was, I took a photo of a big pile of what looked like raw chicken breasts that were dumped on top of the grid about 5 yards from our back gate. This wasn’t the first time this has happened either. It was the third or fourth time. As I tried to get a bit closer I had to suddenly stop and back off. Welcome to Fly Central!!!
How many health hazards present in having this pile of rotting meat just left on the ground do you reckon? The mind boggles.
Luckily we haven’t seen any young children playing in the alleyway. Mind you cats and dogs are often seen there. Probably why one of our Super Mogs has suddenly started bringing us more and more, furry presents. Thanks Annie, but no thanks!!!
The Big Litter Survey – My Question To CWAC
In my latest message to CWAC (as I say, no reply as yet, but hopefully soon), I asked them if they had considered and in fact costed out the option of CCTV cameras. CCTV cameras to be strategically placed in the alley. I’m not sure how much they would cost.
But, on the flip side, how much does it cost to regularly send out a truck to deal with and remove all the crap from the alley? How much does it cost, time wise to deal with emails from the likes of me and others? I know I’m not the only resident in touch with them by the way.
How much did it cost for all those brochures? It’s also worth considering that a CCTV camera system may help to become self financing if fly tipping continues. Catching fly tippers and fining them accordingly may help with setting off some of the costs of the CCTV project. Just a thought. It may have already been considered and the idea dismissed. If so, it would be useful to know.
Yes, a big litter survey. Well worth a look methinks. I’m on the case. Maybe you will give it some thought as well.
Thanks for reading folks. Stay safe one and all.
A Final Message To Fly Tippers And Litter Dumpers
If any fly tippers or litter dumpers are reading. Give yer head a wobble please and pack it in. Think of the whole community at large please instead of your own personal, selfish reasons for dumping stuff.
When I say think about the community at large I include in that of course a consideration for health and safety reasons. I’ve already mentioned the raw chicken and the health hazards. Cupboards, chests of drawers and other inflammable items. You’ve got it, think of the potential fire hazards.
Thanks for wobbling yer heads and thanks for your consideration. Much appreciated.
